Sorry. I know this question is asked time and time again but i was wondering if I could get some other opinions.
I haven’t visited Fsu yet but we are planning to within the next few weeks. I have visited uf and loved it and I think I would be happy there. However, I am going to list the pros and cons and was wondering if someone could help me out:
UF:
Pros:
Generally better academically if I decide not to continue with medicine.
Shands is a huge benefit for volunteering.
Similar in cost for me but UF is slightly cheaper to get to and i know someone there.
love The feel of the gator nation and the school spirit.
-I applied for summer and I really want to start I now summer.
Cons:
Seems like every kid freshman year is pre Med and even though there is weeding at every school, UF may Ben more competitive.
-I have met people going to UF next year and they seem cool but a lot of students there seem to think they’re better than everyone because they go to UF. Not everyone doesn’t I have just noticed this.
Fsu:
Pros:
-Everyone I have talked to says the campus is beautiful.
-I like their Med schools underserved focus and even though that doesn’t affect undergrads, their Med school doesn’t accept a lot of Fsu undergrads.
-nicer dorms
Cons:
the obvious at this point is that i haven’t visited yet and don’t know how I’ll feel there.
UF is better academically for all the other fields I’m considering.
-Even though uf isn’t super easy to get to, it’s a lot easier for me than Fsu.
I always recommend going with the school whose mascot belongs to the species Alligator mississipiensis.
You may want to search for UF vs FSU threads, I’m sure it’s been hashed out before. You pretty much already know the differences between the two schools, and I’m sure you’ll make the right choice, for you, after you visit FSU.
I always wonder where this comes from. In Gainesville, everyone is at UF (or Santa Fe), so no one cares. Both FSU and UF are fun schools, with a great group of students. It’s basically the same group of students at the two schools (in-state Florida residents), with the UF kids averaging a little higher on the SAT/ACT and GPA scores. The FSU and UF kids all sat in the same high school class rooms, played on the same teams, hanged out together…Don’t buy into the myths about either school.
@heosaurus17 - Your pros and cons are generally correct and you can be successful from both schools as well as USF and UCF.
FWIW, UF produced 854 med school applicants, while FSU produced 338. The UF med school acceptance rate was about the same as the national average of 42% to 45%. I could not find the FSU med school acceptance rate, but see no reason for it to be better than the national average.
Sometimes you can look up the class profiles of different med schools to see their placement. Some examples.
Some might ask if it matters. Well, if you live in South Florida and want to attend UM’s med school but have to go to a public undergraduate for cost reasons, FIA and UF have the best in-state public placement at Miller as follows:
Florida Atlantic University – 2, Florida International University – 8, Florida State University – 1, Florida Southern College – 1, University of Central Florida – 2, University of Florida – 12, University of Miami – 40, University of North Florida – 1
It’s good to have variety on your resume. I would get a bachelor’s at FSU and med degree at UF or vice versa.
I know people who got their bachelor’s, master’s, and doctorate all from the same school. It looks lazy and looks like they took the easiest path. You get exposed to more people and new ideas when you switch schools.
@mom2collegekids sorry that was supposed to say does. And obviously they aren’t supposed to have a preference, but when you look at the profile of their incoming class, a significant amount came from fsu.
