Hey, I’m sure you’ve seen this over and over but i simply can’t decide on the two schools and really wanted some extra advice. I am transferring from Umass next fall to either UF or FSU. I really liked both schools and keep going back and forth between which i like better.
I like the smaller campus at FSU as its a change from what i have a Umass now with bussing around campus, but i also kinda liked the whole set up at UF where the town felt very integrated into the campus.
If i went to UF i would have to do a year at Santa fe as i don’t have 60 credits, but would be able to transfer into FSU after covering my math and english requirements.
Im majoring in biology (and considering a psych minor as I’m very interested in it) with the hope of going to dental school, and i know UF is ranked higher in STEM.
another less important thing that i noticed is that FSU is an extra two hours from my home in clearwater but as i said thats not the biggest issue
does anyone have any personal advice or experiences at either school?
No experience, my son is also trying to decide between UF, FSU and UCF.
As you know, UF has a School of Dentistry. However going to UF doesn’t guarantee you will get into their dental school. The top factors to consider:
GPA – you should be aiming for 3.5 or better. I believe UF’s average is 3.6 for dental school applicants.
DAT score – (dental school exam) Score of 19 or higher. UF average is 20.
GPA in science classes: Should be 3.5/3.6 range.
It doesn’t hurt to take a fine arts class like painting or scultpure, something to talk about in your eventual interview for Dental School, they like to see a diversity of majors/classes, and the fact that you can do delicate work with your hands!
So ask yourself how strong a student you are. Will you attain the necessary GPA at a school like UF where the majority of the students were in the top 10 percent of their high school classes? If you feel you will thrive in that competitive atmostphere, then UF should get strong consideration.
If you feel the collaborative atmosphere of FSU will be more conducive to strengthening your GPA, maybe that’s the way to go.
The thing is, it comes down to how well YOU perform in the necessary classes, especially the sciences. BTW you don’t have to major in the sciences, oftentimes they are intrigued to see a major outside the sciences (as long as the necessary science classes are taken, of course). Similar to med school. My niece was a Psychology major and got into med school no problem.
Good luck deciding!
