UF vs FSU

My S is trying to decide on which school to attend for compostition. We've heard good things about UF's composition program but we're aware of FSU's overall excellent reputation for music. UF's number of undergrads in music is roughly 180 compared to about 750 at FSU. I think my S would acutally prefer the smaller music dept though I can see advantages for both.

I'd love to hear any opinions on music school size (advantages/disadvantages) and any opinions on UF's and FSU's programs.

Thanks!

Here's a related area where people could probably give you in-depth information about the FSU College of Music. There is at least one FSU faculty member who posts there:

I've never heard anything, good or bad, about UF's compostion/school of music. I do know that FSU's College of Music is world renowned and has a great reputation. Also, the UF music department may be smaller, but the overall university is larger. I think there's about 10,000 more students at UF, which is something to consider.

I have heard that FSU's College of Music is beastly competitive. The best thing to do would be to visit each university and decide for yourself.

My S is lucky enough to have both FSU and UF interested in his musical talents and although there is nothing official yet, both have indicated he would be a likely candidate for scholarship dollars. FSU has a very strong reputation in music and is much larger than UF’s program, so there are lots of pluses and minuses with each…anyone else face this dilemma?
