I posted this same thing on the UF board and it was suggested I do the same here to get feedback. I think I am leaning toward FSU.

Hi

I am new to this web site and recently was accepted to UF for the summer B term. Previously, I got accepted to FSU in November. I am from oos and I don't feel any strong allegiance to being a Nole or a Gator. I love sports and bith schools seem to have tremendous school spirit.

I visited both campuses and really liked them a lot. I am not sure yet what I plan to study yet .

For those who go to UF and maybe have friends at FSU, can you please give me your honest opinion on what makes UF or FSU better. The campuses both seemed to be nice, but FSU appeared to have many more new and renovated buildings. For example they have two new dorms and a bunch of new academic buildings.
Being out of state, the students I met at both schools seemed really nice. Is there a big difference between the student bodies at each?

Thanks for any info you can give me. I feel so lucky to have gotten into UF and FSU. My SATs were only 1270 and with all thats going on, I feel like I am lucky to have gotten in.

FSU students strive for success, but also know how to enjoy the social experiences college has to offer. As long as your major is offered, you should decide if this balanced atmosphere is what you want in your college experience.

Both my daughters selected FSU over UF (to respond to your post on the UF board). Both are the best public universities of their class in Florida. It really depends on what fits for you and what you want to study.

UF is more of an agricultural school while FSU is more of a liberal arts school.

Both have excellent law schools - the best in FL. Both have med schools, UF's is older while FSU's is quite new.

Some programs are stellar at one or the other, but not always both. The highlights list for FSU indicates fairly well some of the best programs, at FSU, but not all: FSU Highlights

FSU is located in Tallahassee - the state capital. This has some significant advantages for programs related to government and law, especially political science. FSU also has the only national laboratory in Florida - the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory ( National High Magnetic Field Laboratory ).

Yeah, all we UF students do is study study study...right? The party and social atmospheres at both schools are great, maybe even better at UF because of the size and the sports.

BTW, if they all strive for success, why are they at FSU (you're going to be misleading and nasty, well so am I)?

What did I say that is nasty? I just feel that FSU has a more laid back atmosphere with a good balance of work and play. That (and the university scholarship) is why my son chose FSU over the other fine state schools.

ABCB, I think you're hurting your case by displaying that classless attitude. Do you think that the OP will want to spend the next four years with people like you? You're not representing your university very well on this board. Stop with the insulting posts and get a clue.

TONS of students choose FSU over UF, including myself. It all comes down to personal preference.

BTW, even my UF buddies agree that the "party scene" at FSU is much stronger. My UF friends used to drive to Tally every single weekend just to experience it first hand.

I am a freshman at UF and I am actually surprised at the students that stay at UF because they have so much fun and stuff, yet are the brightest in Florida. To answer the OOS student's question, UF is more competitive and harder to get into and is considered more prestigious than FSU and having a degree from UF is more highly looked upon, however FSU does have some good things about it as well. The bad thing about being at UF is that even being a gator myself, I get tired of the cocky atmosphere and feeling the need to always compete against people as if I have something to prove. If you have a problem with living up to high standards and feel you would die at a school where its every man for themselves, go to FSU, where you're cared about, because I can honestly say UF doesnt give a crap lol. However, it is pretty much understood that UF is out of the league of every other university in Florida, and is the most affordable university in Florida on top of that

By the way, I am black. Most of the parties that happen on the party street seem to be dominated by blacks and hispanics...i havent heard of any white parties, so as far as parties, I would say its typically the white people who find themselves traveling to FSU for parties, because blacks and hispanics are just fine with the party scene at UF lol

correct which is why i plan to go to FSU for grad or medical school. there is no way im staying at UF after undergrad years. i can only take the cockyness for so long lol....UF absolutely is not an option after I graduate from UF with an undergrad degree. it's a great place, but FSU was actually my first choice last year, my senior year of high school. the only reason i came to Uf is because I heard it was competitive and wanted to challenged myself to see if i could make it. plus, its closer to home. but i dont have a problem with FSU in anyway and plan to go their after undergrad years =)

but i could have sworn i read somewhere that UF is the top university in the nation that graduates African Americans and hispanics. maybe im wrong

Thanks for all the input. I really didn't mean to get people to fight with each other. I know its just a passionate feeling you have for your school. I was leaning toward FSU before and now I feel better about my decision. I met many really nice students at UF when I visited, it just seems from some of the comments that I have read that there is a certain sense of arrogance at UF and I dont think I would fit in well with that. I also dont really see such a big difference academically between the two. The UF business program (I think I want to major in that), is great. But the FSU program is also really good.

I am sure that UF is a fine school.. After all I applied, so I must have liked something about it. As far as the value of the degree goes. For me, being from the northeast, I really don't sense that people up here think there is much difference between the two schools.

I hope to go on to graduate school anyway (I am leaning toward studying Finance as an undergraduate), so it seems that my advanced degree will have a bit more meaning to potential employers down the road.

It's nice that the UF students think that the UF undergraduate degree is worth so much more than an FSU degree. Obviously, they feel like they are getting a great education and national rankings beyond the top ten schools matter. They may be right, but for me, FSU seems like it will a better fit.

Thanks again everyone for all your input. Both schools are really good and have much to offer. By turning down UF, I will be opening my spot up for one of the students who has been deferred. Hopefully that helps.

classof2012, congratulations on deciding to be a Seminole. Judging by your humble posts, it seems like FSU is the better fit for you. It's funny how quickly you picked up on the whole "UF arrogance" thing. Not all of them are like that, but you'll definitely see it once in a while.

The FSU College of Business is excellent and can hold it's own with any business school in the country. I think it's currently ranked in the top 30, not that it really matters all that much.

Good luck at FSU, it'll be some of the best years of your life.

Congrats on your acceptances. My d will also be a freshman this fall at FSU.
After one visit to UF, she decided she wasn't interested in being a part of a school where such an attitude of elitism appeared to be the norm. She chose to make FSU her #1 choice and refused to apply to UF.
She is totally pumped about her decision to attend FSU and will be in their honors program starting this fall.
Many of my d's friends have chosen UF, since it is closer in proximity to our home town in SWFL, so one's personal preference is a huge factor and where one finds their "best fit".
