UF vs Penn State vs BU vs CWRU for premed

Hello; last minute checking on the university to make the decision. Currently, she has Univ Florida (total cost $28k), pend state ($28.5k), Boston University ($61k). Case western ($59). One possible career is premed and another is economics (graduate school afterwards). Does anyone know the premed ranking of these 4 schools? What are the medical school acceptance rate for each school. Thank you

Who is she?

She should be reaching out to each school’s pre-med advisors and seeing data. But all data is not the same - as to what is included.

Most who start pre-med won’t finish. And most who apply don’t get in.

Are all schools affordable? Has the student looked at shadowing and other opportunities? Has the student visited - BU is different than Case and both are very different than PSU and UF.

The student needs to make this decision - and it should be based on fit - and finances are a part of fit.

Pre-med | Undergraduate Admission | Case Western Reserve University

Penn State Premedical-Medical Program - Undergraduate Admissions (psu.edu)

I think you’ve been given good advice on your other thread.

Has she visited all these schools? They’re very different. I would be reluctant to put a deposit down if she hasn’t.

It sounds like your D is all over the place with majors. BU and Case are expensive options for your D to figure out her major. Boston is a great, maybe the best college city going but BU’s campus isn’t for everyone.

All schools on your list will prepare your D for med school. That said, med school is very expensive and reimbursements keep declining. Minimizing debt if you can is a good idea unless money is not an issue.

She’s been accepted to Schreyer Honors. Unless it’s a terrible fit take it for the win. Happy kids tend to do better in school.

Schreyer has its own endowment. How many Honors programs have that? William Schreyer has given $55M just to the honors program. That funds a lot of resources and opportunities just for honors students. For comparison, ASU Barrett which is a highly regarded honors program sits at $12M.

Schreyer offers over 300 honors classes. I don’t think many other honors programs come close.

If she still wants premed a year from now she can apply for guaranteed admission to med school through Schreyer.

And then there’s the largest alumni network…

There’s no wrong choice. All are good options. Good luck.

Not to digress off topic but this is not correct.

Schreyer offers over 300 honors classes. I don’t think any other honors programs come close.

From U of SC:

  • Nearly 600 Honors-only classes available each year, from Honors versions of Biology and English, to boutique classes like Literary Hauntings: Ghosts, Specters, and Other Undead and Social Informatics: Uses and Consequences of Technologies in Everyday Life

Let me rephrase to “many” other honors programs…and Carolina has an excellent honors program.

The issue here is they really have such a variety of schools. At a CWRU, for example, every class in Honors in essence. They don’t need an Honors College.

At my kids public, I’m not saying every class is Honors level but even her non Honors classes are Honors sized etc. 10-20 kids. So Honors to me sometimes is more a marketing thing.

This is such a difficult situation due to the differing environments and costs.

They say PSU doesnt have shadowing like others. I dunno. I would research that. UF has Shands Hospital.

If it was me, I’d be at PSU. It’s cheaper and it’s such a nicer campus than Florida (my opinion). It’s just a great place to look out and walk around every day. Florida - ehhhhh.

The others - if you love uner urban and can afford it BU is great. But you have to love that environment. And it’s not small at all. And it’s pricey.

And CWRU - obviously will have medical shadowing access but the campus is odd. But if you love Italian little Italy is right there

I’m a value guy. I’d choose from the big 2 and cheap 2 and PSU is just so dang nice. Schreyer is a bonus !!!

@Sonya2023 what was the decision? Good luck.

It is possible to take the pre-med courses as a math, statistics, or economics major.
