I was wondering if anyone can tell me what they think is a better school FOR MEDICINE ONLY! Please be honest and dont say Florida is better because you hate Miami sportswise. I need an honest opinion because one of these have a chance of being my match to high match school. Look at my stats if needed by doing the "find more posts by california_love8" thing. btw I posted the same post with a few changed words in the Miami forum, so it really does you no good to lie based on your biases. Please substantiate your claims properly

Clearly UF offers a better medical degree. Check out the stats via US News

I think she meant undergraduate as in Pre-Med. For that I would go with University of Miami because they give you some benefit if you attended University of Miami as an undergraduate.

Here are the statistics straight from the UM Med School Website (You can take these and do a comparison with the UF med statistics and see which one suits you better)

Personally I think those undergraduate schools are VERY impressive and so are the undergraduate gpa as well as science gpa.

Good luck and please post back what you find with UF.

UF is ranked 47th overall and is the 13th best public university. Only costs around 3k a year instate and 17k a year out of state.

Vs.

UM is ranked 54th overall and is the not even a top 30 private university. Costs 31k a year.

UF >>> UM

Unfortunately, the best public university is not as good as the best private university.

UF is in Gainesville which does not have as much city nightlife as University of Miami. If all you want is frat/house parties then UF would be for you. If you want nightclubs, restaurants, athletic events, lounges and bars, University of Miami would win.

University of Florida is subject to budget cuts which can drastically effect its academics and tuition

Gainesville is not as nice as Coral Gables and the cost of living in Gainesville is MUCH cheaper than the cost of living in Coral Gables.

So basically it comes down to which environment you prefer. If it's the typical college campus atmosphere with mostly frat/house parties and little in terms of nightclubs, restaurants and lounges or athletic events off campus, go to University of Florida.

If you are even the least bit city oriented go to University of Miami.

"Unfortunately, the best public university is not as good as the best private university."

Fact: UF's endowment is over $300 million dollars more than UM's. Endowment size is the most important factor in determining a private universities ranking. UM is poor in comparison to the top private universities in the tier 1 category.

"UF is in Gainesville which does not have as much city nightlife as University of Miami. If all you want is frat/house parties then UF would be for you. If you want nightclubs, restaurants, athletic events, lounges and bars, University of Miami would win."

Obviously you have never hung out in Gainesville. There are literally a hundered bars, and they are all filled with UF's 50k + students.

"University of Florida is subject to budget cuts which can drastically effect its academics and tuition"

I don't think that you are in any position to make any judgements on UF's budget. I do know that UF will always be ranked ahead of UM.

"Gainesville is not as nice as Coral Gables and the cost of living in Gainesville is MUCH cheaper than the cost of living in Coral Gables."

Different strokes for different folks. I do know that in Gainesville you don't have to worry about the crime rate as you would in Miami.

I do know the average cost of a home in Gainesville is nowhere near as high as a cost of a home in Coral Gables. Gainesville doesn't have $10 million+ waterfront mansions, but Coral Gables does.

Gainesville doesn't have an NBA Championship winning team in the Miami Heat. Nor does Gainesville have the Miami Dolphins.

South Beach is in Miami not Gainesville. The number of nightclubs in South Beach alone are greater than the number of nightclubs in Gainesville.

Cruises leave from Miami not Gainesville.

A lot more bands/performers/DJ's come to Miami. Bob Sinclair a famous techno DJ is on his western tour and he went to Boston two days ago and Miami I believe last night.

Like I said previously SSobick, University of Florida does not have as much nightlife as University of Miami. It's that simple. Yes, Gainesville may have bars , but they don't have championship winning professional athletic teams, they don't get major bands coming to play and they don't have the famed South Beach.

When was the last time you checked the tour date for a major band such as say U2 and it said Gainesville, Florida on it?

Why the animosity towards UM? Let me guess... you go to UF?

Florida hasn't done anything in the rankings in recent times. They have always ben around the 46-52 range. Miami has only increased their ranking by 12 spots within the last 4 years.

Florida will always be a public school with a price tag significantly lower than Miami's. On the other hand, Miami will always have students that are more well-off on average and will have a much larger amount of the Bmw/MB/Audi driving rich kids walking around with their Dolce & Gabanna sunglasses and Dior handbags when compared to UF.

I fail to see the logic in the comparison. Are we comparing UF vs UMiami or Gainesville vs Miami? Perhaps the only take home message is Gainesville is a great college town while Miami is a thriving city.

Yes, I attended UF and have never visited Miami.

are you going to college to party? you're basing mostly, if not all of your arguments on miami's nightlife.. since when has that been the primary reason students go to UM?

I wrote what I did in response to SSobick's claim that UF has bars and nightlife comparable to Miami's, which as I have pointed out, it clearly doesn't.

He is talking very negatively of Miami, when in reality its a great school.

I have nothing against UF, and believe for the price it's a great school with some great programs in certain fields.

I will not let SSobick keep putting down UM.

Obviously University of Florida's endowment will be higher when you have 30,000 something kids versus 10,000 you tend to have a lot more graduates and also a lot more money.

University of Florida will never break the Top 45 unfortunately. I'm not saying this to put the school down, but the reason is because UF can't skew its statistics in admissions and draw from out of state the way Miami or another private school can.

For this very same reason, there is no public school ranked in the top 5 in the country. The very best schools in the United States are private (Harvard, Yale & Princeton.)

The facts are plain and simple, Florida wins for the traditional college atmosphere with house/frat parties and mostly on-campus activities.

University of Miami wins for a more suburban/urban atmosphere with more off-campus activities.

Florida has some higher ranked program than Miami and Miami has some higher ranked programs than Florida.

Florida is much cheaper than Miami and their students are not from as well-off backgrounds on the average. This comparison could hold true for any $40,000+/year private versus the in-state public school.

Bottom Line: Both great schools and none is academically better to the point where academics would justify a person choosing one school over the other. What it comes down as people have pointed out before between UF and UM is fit.

If you want the traditional college atmosphere head to UF and if you can afford UM and prefer the more urban atmosphere go to University of Miami.

"I will not let SSobick keep putting down UM."

If you call doing viable research that correctly shows the advantages over the University of Miami, then I suppose that I am guilty. I do believe that UM is an outstanding institution that has many invaluable programs for our state.

The simple truth is that UF has only been competing with the other top-15 publics for the last decade. We were ranked the 27th overall best public back in the mid-90's and we have progressed all the way down to the 13th spot. We will be in the top-10 within the next 3 years (Mark it down).

SSobick if you say being in the top 10 of all public schools in the country is an accomplishment, I would have to certainly disagree if you are comparing it to the achievement of being in the top 10 of all private schools in the country.

Realize that University of Miami's competition is incredibly higher than Florida's, if we look at the UF vs. other public schools and UM vs. other private schools debate.

Miami was in the mid 60's but now has progressed all the way down to the low 50's. In the next 5 years we will be in the Top 50 nationally, - mark it down. This includes all public and private national universities as per U.S. News.

What advantages besides rank and cost does UF have over Miami? NONE

What advantages does Miami have over UF? Football

how can you brag about miami football less than a week after they lost to fsu???

I think he meant the Dolphins (did they lose too?) and not the Hurricanes.

No, he was referring to the Hurricanes.

Listen, this debate is pretty pointless. The original poster wanted to hear opinions on the respective med schools. Instead, we get a ridiculous discussion on which city has a better night life. (BTW, Miami wins) Both schools have great programs. I wanted to study engineering, so I went to UF. But if I wanted to study criminology, I would go to Miami. The point is go to the school that you think is right for you.

To the OP: Both UF and UM have great medical schools. UF has a lot more specialities than UM, so the edge would go to UF. But keep in mind that the requirements American med schools have to fullfill by the AMA are so strict that you will get virtually the same training at ANY medical school.

But one of his earlier post: "Nor does Gainesville have the Miami Dolphins."

Anyway UF wins again and UM loses again.

The football team is having a rough year. Anyway, 5 national titles all since 1980 is quite an accomplishment.

Hopefully next year's team will rebound to be a consistent top 10 team.

"Hopefully next year's team will rebound to be a consistent top 10 team."

I really don't see that happening

This debate is basically pointless. There is no difference in perceived image when comparing UF and UM. Both are ranked in the same general area. They both have the same exact SAT range and both are rising higher.

Neither school is ranked significantly higher than the other, neither school has an SAT range signficantly higher than the other.

If you go to UM with a 3.5 gpa you will have the same exact opportunities as UF with a 3.5 gpa.

Another words, the higher rank and increased selectivity of UF are so small that the perception of the two is on the same level.
