I don’t know which to decide and it’s pretty much a matter of I want to go to med school after I get my bachelors. I have a full ride to FIU and I have florida pre paid so UF would be free too and with bright futures I would be getting money back. On the other hand if I go to UM I’d be in debt 30k after graduating (15k a year). I am graduating with my associates degree as well as my high school diploma. What should I do? I plan to major in Chemistry and double in math or biomedical engineering.
Assuming UM is Miami, I’d go to UF.
why UF?
Did you get Honors college at UF?
Right now, it’s a no brainer though: UF for free.
Zero tuition at a comparable school.
No honors college at UF and also considering NYU vs UCLA now, but will be in a lot of debt
You, as a freshman, can only take $5,500 in loans. So what you’re saying is that you’d be willing to add to your parents’ debt in order to go to NYU or UCLA…
Was not aware of that, so what would be best
Can you still apply to Honors at UF? If you got into UCLA and NYU, it means you have excellent stats, and since your got a great scholarship it means you should be able to get into the honors college at UF. This would make the university closer to what you’d have at other top schools - smaller classes, driven classmates, etc. (Even though, with average WGPAs in the 4.1-4.3 range, ALL UF students are good students. :p)
Your only chance of getting into HOnors is by getting straight A’s your first semester at UF.

FIU, I assume, you’re in the Honors College. If you remain premed, this may be the best option - med schools don’t really care where you went undergrad, they “just” want you to be in the top 10-20% of your class with high grades in all your science classes + great MCAT score. Honors students tend to get higher grades in their Honors classes, which is great for GPA, and premed at FIU may not be as competitive as premed at UF.
However, if like 3/4th freshmen you realize you don’t want to be premed, FIU may not be as good (unless you want to do some of their specialty majors like marine biology or zoology/animal science.) You’ll have to start using Bright Futures right after graduation and continuously, even with the free ride, so you’ll have to figure out a way to save some money, and if after a year or two you realize you don’t want to be premed and can’t stand FIU, you could transfer to UF (if you have a premed-worthy GPA, ie., 3.6+, it should be rather easy to transfer) and use the rest of your Bright Futures plus all of your FLorida prepaid which you wouldn’t have used thanks to the free ride at FIU. Check if this is possible, as it may be a way out - the first two years in honors are the most important anyway, so you’d get the best of both world, small interactive classes with driven classmates for your first two years, and then transfer to UF for the rigorous advanced major classes there. Downside: you’d have less time to get to know professors, get into research, etc, so it may be more difficult for you to get letters of recommendation at UF.
Thanks for your input, I am pretty set on pre med, but of course I would like to have other options if I decide to change my mind. It is too late to apply to the honors college, but I think I am going to end up going to UF and will try to get into it while there. As for NYU and UCLA in your opinion do you think by attending it there will be much more opportunities than if I went to FIU or UF? Like do you think it’s worth paying 250k for a Master’s? Just a question thank you.
I would go to FIU and put that Florida Prepaid funds towards my Medical School (I think you can do that, right?). For premed, UF does not offer any significant advantages over FIU. To get into medical School, good grades ( >=3.7 GPA) and good MCAT Score (~31). You stand a much better chance at getting better grades at FIU than UM and UF. Chemistry/Math is the same at whatever Florida University you attend. BTW, Florida Prepaid is not free
Thanks I’ll take that into consideration as well, right now FIU is looking good cause keeping money for med school is smart. And yeah I know pre paid was paid off by my parents. Thank you
