UGA Alternatives

If I dont get in for some reason (3.5, 1240, all honors, 3 ap), I will probably be at Georgia Southern. I got into the honors program and scholarships.

I'm also looking into Mercer.

Where is everyone else going as a backup?

I was wondering what people had for other choices. If I don't get in, it is going to be between Auburn, Georgia Southern, and possibly the University of Alabama.

i was looking at Alabama too (along with Tennessee) for out of state, but I dont know if I can do $20k per year

Mercer is my backup also. Nice school

waiting for UGA

3.5 and 1380/1600
2040/2400

I'd also look into Clemson - but Auburn and Ga southern are also good backups.

Well, there are places like Georgia College and State University (Milledgeville) or North Georgia College University and State University (Dahlonega). If you didn't get into UGA, would you want to transfer in up the road? Several students from the above-named schools eventually transfer to UGA. Is your GPA of 3.5 weighted or unweighted? Your SAT is right about at the average for UGA and your GPA is a little on the low end. It looks like you took a challenging curriculum, though. I still you have a good chance here. Good Luck!!

he can still get in but he needs to have a good course load and ecs with leadership. i am waiting. GA state and kennesaw are my back ups. i will probably do kennesaw because it does have a better science program. does uga have admissions based off of race

It is pretty known that URMs (especially African Americans and Latinos; not so much Asians as they are not generally underrepresented in post-secondary education) get quite a leg up in the admissions process. This is pretty much the case at a lot of flagships, especially in the South.

well because uga has 5% asians and I know that is lower than tech because they accept many asians

Get your facts straight Katdawg. There are relatively few African-Americans enrolled at the University of Georgia.

Do you have difficulty reading, Lake Washington?? I said in my post that URMs (African Americans, Latinos) get a "leg up" as in advantage because they are underrepresented. Asians are generally not underrepresented in post-secondary education, although as mitan-da1 pointed out, UGA has only 5% Asians.

Katdawg, did you mean underrepresented generally (at American colleges) or were you being specific to the University of Georgia? Also, have YOU read about the restrictions on Affirmative Action [regarding college admissions] which I believe were inacted by the Georgia state legislature in recent years? My point is Affrican-Americans are not significantly benefiting from "a leg up" in admissions at the University of Georgia as some would believe.

This is particularly true considering the high ratio of African-American 18-year old high school graduates in the state. True, college-age Black Georgians opt for Morehouse College, Spelman College, Georgia State University, Georgia College and West Georgia University over UGA because they perceive that UGA is uncomfortable (and perhaps hostile) because of the underrepresentation of African-Americans there.

Mt Washington, You are obviously knowledgeable about schools (or so the 958 postings you have made) lead one to think so. I can't imagine you know the climate at EVERY school. I am simply here to answer questions about UGA (the institution I know best). Although the state legislature has made affirmative action difficult to implement here, UGA has made significant efforts to recruit African Americans. If you go to our site, you will see that a disproportionate number of our admissions counselors are black. I can't help it that my institution has a history of discrimination, but that shouldn't take away from the fact that UGA is a great school.

i agree with katdawg

Thanks Mitan_da1! At least someone understands!

When will UGA start accepting applications for Fall '08?

Oh and are race relations really that bad at UGA?

13lueflame,

Bad race relations is more of an old myth than a reality here. Yes, UGA has a history of such (as did MOST southern public universities), but we have really made strides to overcome this. The number of African Americans who have come each year has really (well relatively) picked up in the last few years. Some African Americans choose "lesser" institutions (West Georgia, Georgia State) because they want a more black-dominant environment (which is understandable), but those blacks on UGA's campus tend to be a very ambitious group of people (maybe more so than the student body at large). I personally haven't witnessed any [remotely] heinous acts of discrimination at UGA. UGA also has more black tenured professors than most public schools. So no, I would not really consider race relations as "bad" here. Any African American UGA students want to comment on this/add a different perspective??

What do you think of Dawg camp?

Is it really worth it?

Folks such as Katdawg resort to innocuous sarcasm when the arguments they attempt to stand on become eith quicksand or mud. And as for my number of posts, I guess you haven't notices that CC has a variety of subjects, including a potpourri called Parent's Cafe. Finally, as a great emperor of ancient Rome was alleged to have said "...it's quality baby, not quantity."

Please don't resort to attacking people. I made the fatal mistake of standing up for myself the first time you went after me; that was obviously a mistake. As I have said, I am simply here to help people/inform people about UGA. I feel that I know the school quite well, and I am being very careful what I say. I am, in no, way trying to misrepresent things. People on here simply don't care for other posters who claim to be experts on an unreasonable number of schools, especially schools they never attended. I think other people on this board would appreciate keeping this constructive.

Katdawg is correct, UGA does actively recruit black students. Affirmative action is used in the admissions process. It is also true that black students have it easier when getting into most colleges around the country due to affirmative action. I don't really understand why you are so offended by that.
