So I will be attending UGA in the fall and am a recipient of the charter scholarship which is worth $1,000. I was curious as to whether this money can be spent towards a laptop which I will need to buy before the fall, or is this $1,000 just deducted from my tuition. I know I will be saving $1,000 no matter how the money is used, but I wanted to know mainly from people who have received this scholarship if I will have more liberty as to how this money is spent.

Congratulations on receiving the Charter! My daughter received last year (her first)
and the way it works is this - they apply all funds - Hope, Charter, outside scholarships to your account and deduct all expenses - room & board, fees from that. You will get a bill
for the difference. In our case, the Charter & outside scholarships more than covered her expenses and there was an overage - which they refunded. Hope you like UGA as much as she does! Good luck!

Thank you! Ok but I am still a little curious about this scholarship and I’ll try to be very specific. I’m interested in buying a macbook pro for college and I know they’re very expensive. Now i believe the UGA bookstore has some type of apple store inside it (unless I totally just imagined seeing it, i wasn’t paying attention too much on the tour). If I buy a macbook from the store will they be able to deduct the $1,000 from my account. I’m just trying to convince my parents that while they may be spending $1500 or so out of pocket for a laptop, I’m actually saving them 1000 and it would make it easier if they don’t even have to pay 1000 if we buy it from the UGA bookstore. I hope this makes sense and I know it’s a weird question I’m just confused.

I wish I could give you a definitive answer, but I suggest you call the bursar’s office and ask them. Good luck - hope it works for you

Ok thank you so much for your help I will call the bursars office to find out.

woody, I’m pretty sure purchases from the bookstore are not posted to your student account at the Bursar’s. But as you point out, the $500 per semester (that’s how they credit the 1,000) will be that much less out of pocket, which can then be applied to your notebook computer. Bookstore does have an Apple store, and they usually offer student specials.

jw…would either/both of you (recipient and mother of recipient) mind giving your stats? im wanting the charter really bad so im curious about how i compare…
thanks

I am not either of the above people but I also received Charter.

SAT: 2380 (800 CR, 780 M, 800 W) - single-sitting
GPA: 4.396 W / 3.75 UW; ranked 29/430-ish. Upward trend. Most rigorous curriculum.

Other test scores: three 800 SAT IIs, and some 5’s on AP tests that I’m pretty sure I couldn’t all fit in. Asian girl, attending a public magnet in the suburban Atlanta area, no hooks to speak of. Biochem/English major. I think that’s everything that went on the app?

The other kid I know who got Charter had slightly lower SATs but a higher class rank (same school). You, ah, might want to get more data points, though.

dalton2010 -
my student received the charter and had these stats:
1580/2350 SAT 1 sitting
1/470 @ top 10 (GA) public
NMF/AP Scholar w/distinction/pres. of 1 club/10 APs- all 5

chose UGA due to generous AP policy - ability to get masters in 4 yrs
no debt/ will go on to professional or grad school

thanks! if any other charter recipients or ppl who know charter recipients read this later on, please post ur stats too!

wow…near perfect sats for both of you!

Hey, Guys, a quick Charter scholarship question here. D2 is an out-of-state student who just received her letter to UGA Honors program. She did not make the Fellows cut but was told she would be considered for the other scholarships (Charter). Does UGA send you a rejection letter if you don’t make the cut for the Charter Scholarship?? And, typically, when do those go out?

We like UGA but can’t go the out-of-state tuition considering her other full-ride offers. Thanks.

Bikedad

I think Charters will be sent out by early April.

So I got into honors (yay!). But im wondering how likely it is that I’ll get the Charter?..

Anyone familiar with the average requirements for the charter? D2 is OOS if that makes a difference. Thanks.

Bikedad

Charter is pretty selective…I received the One scholarship, which is similar to the Charter before the foundation fellows invitation, and I have 35 ACT, 4.0 UW 4.4 W GPA

Do you think being a NMF would help with charter? D2’s got a 34 and a 4.5W. It seems UGA doesn’t care about the NMF so much as UF. NMF definitely helped D2 get OOS waiver and scholarship at UF.

Bikedad

I think you are able to get a small separate amount for NMF. They don’t say much about the NMF money so ask and I think you can get more based on need. It doesn’t seem to be connect with the Charter. I believe the money is coming from different places.

Sorry it took so long to post my stats. but here they are if you still need them

4.0 UW GPA
33 ACT
1440/2100 SAT
9 AP courses
2 college courses

My stats seem lower than everyone elses but i still got into honors and the charter scholarship so that should be good news for people with stats closer to mine.
