UGA culture

Hi there, we live in Maryland and my daughter starting receiving literature from UGA and since she would like to attend a large school in the south, decided to apply. All I know about UGA is that it is in a great college town, is known for SEC football and along with Florida and Vanderbilt in the conference, is highly regarded academically.

What is the culture like at the school? Party like atmosphere? Academic? I suspect that since it is a large school, the answer is yes to both. Any insights would be appreciated.

From what I know, it is a mixture of both. A lot of students are driven academically, but it does have a reputation for being a party school.

UGA is everything. UGA is very cultured and have many opportunities for your daughter.
Like the poster above me said, UGA is known for the party atmosphere but it’s very easy to avoid and there are plenty of students that don’t party (if your daughter isn’t interested in that scene).
Academic life at UGA is amazing. They have a very well respected honors program and many highly intelligent professors. Their course selection is also very vast and your daughter will be sure to find her niche.

The only thing you wouldn’t find at UGA is diversity… UGA is a very Caucasian school (about 70%) but they are trying to expand their outreach to many other areas. UGA hosts several cultural nights and festivities as well as the wide array of clubs they offer for different cultures.

Overall I think your daughter will be very happy at UGA!

My daughter is a freshman at UGA this year from Massachusetts. She is truly loving it. Coincidentally, her closes friend at UGA is from Maryland. There is definitely a big party scene. However, my own daughter is pretty mature and has declined social events when she knows that she needs to study. I think girls are more mature in this respect. She has definitely felt a little bit out of her comfort zone also as most of her friends are from Georgia. But I see this as a positive thing. She also rushed and is now in a sorority. I was ambivalent about her doing that but I do see the benefits now as UGA is very large and this gives her an immediate network. During my 3 visits there over the past year, I have been very impressed with the academics, campus and overall quality of experience. I can only say good things!
