@novamom, where did the scholarship information appear? Ty.
@lulurat it was in the letter, with a hyperlink to an additional letter on the bottom of the page. Sounds weird, but its on the status page.
Question: My DD applied EA and is ranked 1/69 of her Georgia public HS class … she thought as Valedictorian, she was assured a spot for UGA. But today she got deferred.
Anyone had that experience? She’s been accepted to several schools with great scholarship offers, but UGA would be cheaper for us.
@K8sMom2002 - Vals are auto admitted. Here are the requirements. But has the school named her Val already? usually that’s after first semester.
Valedictorians and Salutatorians
Since 2000, it has been the policy of the University of Georgia that the top two graduates of all SACS-accredited high schools in Georgia are assured admission to the University of Georgia’s First-Year class provided that the student meet the following criteria:
Submit an application for first-year admission by the decision plan deadline
Submit all supporting materials to complete their application by the respective deadline
Meet Georgia Board of Regent minimum requirements for admission to a USG Research university
Have their school class rank verified by a school official
Attend an accredited high school with more than 50 graduates
Thanks for the answer… her transcript shows her class rank as 1/69, and her honors list reflects that she has maintained that #1 rank for all three previous years.
Her school doesn’t officially name Valedictorians until May, which worries me because if they decide in April, nothing is really going to change on her transcript.
She has been accepted at Mercer (really good merit scholarship offer) and Georgia Southern (will hopefully be included for Scholarship interview), and Oglethorpe, but she really liked Georgia and sweated over that application.
Thanks … some amazing kids got deferred today, from the looks of it. May you all get to the school where you belong—whether that’s UGA or somewhere else.
@tmeg01 The Honors College states that they admit based on GPA, SAT/ACT, and Cirriculum rigor, however, I find their acceptances to be quite varied and even pretty random - at least based on admissions for my friends. I, like your daughter got a scholarship (Charter), but no Honors College admit. However, I know two friends who have lower GPAs than me and slightly lower test scores who got admitted. Based on my personal experience, the Honors College acceptance has some variability, and it does not follow the guidelines that UGA states it does.
@Jleto18 Thanks for your response. I appreciate your info and perspective. We are from OOS and have very little knowledge about UGA and its interworkings. It’s in my D’s top 3 school list (I’m not sure why), so I’m learning about it. It’s so large (and isolated) that I’m reluctant to send her there unless she gets in the Honors College, which I guess she will be applying to in December. I do find it frustrating that UGA waived half of the OOS tuition differential, but didn’t invite her to the Honors College.
According the admissions blog, they’ll continue awarding scholarships through March, so he might still get one.
Hi. Hope you don’t mind a question. Did your son apply for the Foundation scholarships? My in-state son was admitted to honors and has 4.+ and a 1590 but did not get offered any additional merit aid (beyond Zell) and I was curious if maybe they wait on awarding to Foundation applicants? Thanks!
My son didn’t apply for Foundation (he’s probably going to go with a smaller, OOS school over UGA, so he wanted to focus his essay writing energy elsewhere)…so I’m not sure what the timeline is for that. I believe the next step for those is an invitation to the scholarship weekend for the finalists, though.
@GAMom160 My D is a Foundation Fellow and was awarded a scholarship upon acceptance prior to being notified of selection for interview weekend. But that isn’t indicative of anything. Your son can still be awarded a scholarship even if not selected for interview weekend. Good luck!
Thank you for your input, @itsgettingreal17, but yes, I consider Athens to be isolated since it’s population is only 127,000, and it is 1.5 hrs. from a major airport. It felt very isolated when we visited last spring, which wouldn’t have bothered me if there was a major airport nearby. There are more internship opportunities in major metropolitan areas, and I would prefer my daughter have easy access to an airport for traveling purposes.
As for the Honors College, “offers of automatic acceptance are based on high school grade point average, curriculum, and SAT or ACT scores.” These factors are pretty cut and dried and not “holistic.” My daughter has a perfect 36 on English, 31 Math, 34 Composite, she has always taken honors, pre-APs and 12 APs, has passed every AP exam taken, 3.9 UW, 4.3 W GPA, top 7% of her class. She is over the average Honors College acceptance profile as stated on the UGA Honors website. Another poster says he knows of other kids getting an Honors acceptance with lower test scores and grades, so something seems weird in the acceptances.
Ive read that they wait until official valedictorians are declared, later in the year until admitting on that basis. She should still be admitted.

Are any deferred students offered February acceptances if there are updates on their applications?
yeah, some
@Leaddog from the UGA Admission Blog: re the Feb 8 admits: These admitted freshman, made up of mostly Regular Decision applicants, met the stringent academic criteria of Early Action admission that we used with our much larger wave of November admission offers.
In other words, they identified some academic all-stars from the RD applications that are a slam-dunk for admission and will offer them a spot on Feb 8th. This could include some differed applicants, but no one knows for sure.
drgravesuga on twitter said that very few early action deferred applicants will be admitted if they showed a significant grade increase and test score increase
DD is a OOS Foundation Fellows applicant and applied RD, got a “no” to the program, and just heard today that she is accepted into UGA, the honors program, and offered the classic scholarship.
