How good is UGA in sending students to top graduate schools (i.e. HYSP as well as other top-20 grad schools)? More specifically, how good is the placement for people in the Honors Program? Although I have not heard back from my top choices, there is a good chance that I will end up going to UGA for financial reasons and was wondering that would the money saved by going to an in-state school for just the cost of room and board (with the HOPE scholarship) would be worth possibly not getting into as good of a school (the argument that my parents and many other people make is that we should save the money that we would spend on undergrad for graduate school). In other words, do top graduate programs look down on UGA and the Honors Program? If know that Georgia Tech is in the top 3 for Public Schools as far as top graduate placement goes and they only send a few less than 30 each year. Thanks!

I, too would love to hear upper class students respond to this question. My student is already @ UGA. I know Vig180 (who graduated last year) is at a top grad program (I think HYP?) but perhaps others (Jennmarie?) could comment on what she has heard. Thanks

Actually, I have absolutely no knowledge about UGA and placing undergrads into top grad schools. All my friends are premed. It depends what you’re going to grad school for, I’m sure. If you want to go to grad school for sciences, maybe Tech would be better. But if you’re going for humanities, etc, UGA would definitely be better. I’m sure UGA isn’t looked down upon, but we’re not wayy up there probably. I’m not sure if there’s a “match list” for UGA. Maybe it’s hidden somewhere?

I did do some digging, and here’s what I found (fact book):
Top 10 Graduate and Professional Schools for UGA Class of 2008 (listed alphabetically)
Emory University The University of Georgia
Florida State University The University of Alabama - Birmingham
Georgia State University The University of Maryland
Medical College of Georgia The University of Virginia
Mercer University Vanderbilt University

([Office of Institutional Research](http://www.oir.uga.edu/factbks.htm))

These are probably the highest attended schools, not necessarily the “top” schools (I do know people who are at Yale and Johns Hopkins, so obviously these aren’t the “top” schools)

According to their survey, only 23% of the 2008 class is attending graduate school

THat’s all I can find…sorry I couldn’t be more help

thanks jenmarie - you were MOST helpful!

I know of high graduate school placements is almost every field, especially via the Honors Program, as well as several students who’ve won NSF Graduate Research Fellowships. Off the top of my head, I can think of top 20 placements in math, economics, political science, psychology, cognitive science, molecular biology, education, and definitely a few others I’m forgetting.

While the Honors Program itself seems to be a huge fan of research, as indicated by their strong support for CURO and flexibility with research classes, a significant majority of students still go for more professional schools like med, business, law, etc. But they often participate in some kind of research opportunity along the way, which is nice to see.

I will say though that being from UGA can put you at a disadvantage in the heavily contact-based world of academia, particularly if UGA’s department isn’t/professors aren’t particularly well-known in your field. You might have to work a little bit harder than you would at other schools to get into the same kinds of programs, even holding other factors like GRE and GPA stable, but that can actually be beneficial because you’ll likely have a ton more research experience. And you can’t underestimate just how awesome it is not to have loans from undergrad when you’re spending 5+ years making just a bit more than the poverty line on a grad stipend!
