UGA Honors

I am considering University of Georgia and I know if I apply I have a good chance (hopefully) of getting accepted into the honors college. I'm also looking at the University of South Carolina honors college and Clemson honors college. I haven't decided whether I am interested in pre-med, physical therapy, or psychology but definitely something involved in healthcare. I really like the program but I would love to hear some first hand opinions on it! I would love to hear about how the classes compare, Pros and Cons, if you guys know how it compares to the other schools I'm considering, and also the dorms. (I heard the dorms are kind of quiet and not too much goes on there. I definitely want to do well in school but I'm also very outgoing and would like a dorm with that balance of not being too crazy but not too quiet either. Would Myers Hall offer that or are there other nice dorms that might be better for my personality and what I'm looking for?) Thanks for answering!

Hey! I’m a current honors student at UGA and I can say it’s been much more than I ever thought it could be. When I got accepted to the program last April I was really only excited because Myers was such a nice dorm but the honors program has provided me with a lot of benefits. Here’s what I’ve learned so far:

Classes are much better. They’re smaller in size (my accounting class was 40 instead of 300, my geography was 20 instead of 300), taught by more experienced faculty (I’ve had teachers that totally changed my way of thinking about things and teachers that I just wanted to be best friends with and I’ve been at UGA for under a year), and are generally easier because the professors know you can handle busywork and instead give you meaningful assignments and non-memorization-style tests.

The honors program does everything they can to help you succeed. They have alumni events, honors speakers, an online networking system, the Center for Undergraduate Research, and many opportunities to get to know faculty better. You get early registration so you always get the classes you want and a special honors adviser to help you through your first 2 years before switching to an in-major adviser.

Myers is far nicer than any of the other dorms available to freshmen with the exception of Rutherford, which is available to students who are accepted to the Franklin Residential College. I live there now and if you ever come down to Athens, I’d be happy to give you a tour. For me it came down to what did I want to come home to. The high rises and Hill community might have been more social but at Myers I have clean bathrooms, a big room, a nice lobby, study rooms, and a community of people in the same classes as me. I always feel I can go out to socialize but Myers was definitely the right choice for me.

If you want something where you live in a more social place (and this varies from class to class), I’d choose something in the Hill community–bigger rooms, in-room temperature control, sinks in rooms, close to 2 dining halls, in the middle of campus, and open to freshmen.

Let me know if you have any other questions and I’d recommend joining the UGA Class of 2018 Facebook page for more info!

Hey Amandaphoria, I have been admitted to the UGA Class of 2018. Your explanation of your Honors program experience seems enticing. I would like to know how, and when i can apply for the Honors Program? I would like to enroll as soon as possible.

Well the admission for first semester ended February 1st but you can apply after your first semester at UGA. You’ll need to take at least 15 credit hours (5 courses), make a 3.8 GPA, get 2 teacher recommendations from UGA, and write an essay. It won’t be easy but it’s definitely worth it. You’ll miss out on living at Myers, the honors dorm, but will receive all the other benefits honors offers.
