I'm a rising senior in Georgia and I'm torn between UGA and GA Tech. I was really leaning towards Tech, but I don't know if I can get in. I really like Athens, but I want to study engineering and UGA doesn't offer the degree I would like to study, at least that's what I thought. I recently found out that an Engineering program to introduce new degrees was approved. However, I haven't heard any more news about it since November. Does anyone know if it is still going to happen? How will they fund it? Do you think it will be easier for me to get into UGA if I declare one of the new degrees as my major? Thanks

What engineering major are you looking at specifically?

UGA already offers a good number of engineering classes through Agriculture degrees. The reason UGA’s newest Engr. degrees were approved is because the resources for those degrees already exist in the Ag. programs. I’d recommend taking a look around Bulletin and the Franklin website for more info. on Engr. courses.

Two other thoughts: I don’t think UGA, or any other school for that matter, gives much (or any) weight to intended major in the admissions process because people change majors all the time. On a related note, I think it’s a really bad idea to pick a school because of one specific major (and it sounds like you’re leaning toward Tech. because of a single major).

Good luck in the admissions process and I hope this post is helpful.

Your declared major won’t impact your admissions decision. Ga Tech definitely has the more established engineering program and has more majors to offer. Currently UGA offers engineering degrees through the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences and the Faculty of Engineering.

Both programs are located in Driftmeir and even though they have 2 separate websites they seem to be all together in Driftmeir. The Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering offers Agricultural and Biological engineering degrees. The Agricultural major has elements of mechanical, electrical and civil engineering.

The Faculty of Engineering offers degrees in Biochemical, Computer Systems, and Environmental Engineering.

According to an article in the Atlanta Journal Constitution, UGA will start the civil engineering program in fall of 2012 and the mechanical and electrical programs in fall 2013.

I recommend visiting UGA and meeting with the engineering faculty. My daughter and I found them very accessible and helpful. Their websites have a lot of information about the degrees and the courses required for each degrees.
