Hi- I was wondering if I should create this thread at all, since there's already a thread called "UGA vs. Georgia State University".. but thought I should just go for it :P

So, I got into both UGA and GSU honors, and I'm wondering which would be the better option. I'll most likely major in Cognitive Science if I go to UGA, if that makes any difference. :P

I know that UGA is known to be a better school overall, but I'd just like to know what other people think.

Some things that are on my mind:

GSU
Pro:
- I was generously offered $22,000 over the 4 years.
- Super international, and I feel like I'd get along with people there more.. :/
- Easy transportation (MARTA and all)
- Apartment-style dorms :D
Con:
- I hear that not a lot of people truly love it there, with all the homeless people walking around and stuff..? kind of worries me.
- Not very prestigious at all. I don't really want all my hard work in high school to be wasted.

UGA
Pro:
- I'll most likely apply for Honors after studying hard the first semester
- More prestigious than GSU
- Has a more "campus" feel, I'd say..
Con:
- Party school.
- Not very international
- I just have a bad feeling that I won't find too many people like me there..

Any input would be greatly appreciated :) I really don't know where I should go...

Do you want a city or a college town setting?

I would personally go to UGA.

Well, as a cog sci major, you’ll be on the pretty side of campus for the most part

(Disclaimer: I’m not saying GSU DOESN’T have the following…I’m just saying UGA does)

Great student centers (though they get crowded during midterms and finals…stake out a room early and keep it…most college-y experience I’ve had so far? I basically lived in the MLC for a week so we could keep the room LOL)

Lots of clubs - I’m sure you’ll be able to find at least two or three that fit your interests. Why do you say people may not like you here? There are about 5000 people in each class. I’m sure you’ll be able to find a good number of people to hang out with!

Lots of resources - we have great tutoring services, great career center, and lots of career fairs and such

We do have good transportation here too - Athens Transit. Many buses go to the apartment complexes around town and can take you to school.

Ramsey is awesome if you like working out

Several good dorms - not gonna lie, there are those that should be torn down probably, but we have some good ones and they’re super convenient

To be honest, I would choose UGA (of course). If you think you’re good enough for the honors program, then go to UGA (and even if you aren’t, go to UGA). Don’t waste your talents and money on a school that is lower tiered when you can go to a school that’s higher. It’s all up to you to make UGA the place for you. There is a niche for every student here. You just have to be proactive and find it (and it’s not really that hard to do…we have student organization fairs). And yes, we may be a party school, but if you find friends who don’t party, then partying isn’t a big deal. Not EVERYONE here parties :)

thanks for the response, both of you :)

jenmarie, you seem to be of big help for many, many people on this site… thank you!

but may I ask once again-- I see you’re a pre-med major, but do you happen to know much about the cog sci program at UGA? I found out online that it’s fairly new (like a total of 50 students total?!? talk about microscopic student-teacher ratio?). is it… very developed? I plan on entering grad school and everything, so if the major there sucks, then… :P

I’m pretty sure I’ll pick UGA though. haha

anyone know anything about cog sci at uga…? :(

Sorry, I don’t really know anything about it (then again, I don’t really know anything non-basic science, so…).

What you can try is browsing around their department website. That’s all I can really think of.

I’ve been looking through the site since a couple of months ago and got super interested in it… I was just wondering if it would be a safe route.

Oh well, thanks so much for the response, jenmarie!
