UGA Premed

Hey guys!
I was accepted to UGA and its Honor's Program via early action and I'm still trying to decide between it and Georgia Tech. I'm planning to major in Biology (maybe Biochem) and go down the premed path.

This is a vague question, but how strong is the premed program/science majors at UGA? I know UGA Honors will provide a great education and college experience either way but how strong is its academics and preparation for medical school if compared to Tech?

Thanks!

Hey! I can talk for days about the honors program here at UGA and if you’d like to hear more about it, feel free to message me! Here are a few things I think stand out between these two for pre-med majors:

-CURO (Center for Undergraduate Research) is a great asset. You can start research on your first day.
-smaller classes and closer relationships with professors means they are more likely to involve you in their research and be able to do more in-depth learning. They also have more power to tweak the curriculum of an honors class than a regular one.
-Tech is a known GPA killer. It’ll hurt your chances at med school and possibly burn you out so bad you don’t even wanna go to med school.

Sounds dumb but UGA has a great balance. You have all these organizations to choose from, great academics provided by the honors program, and time for a life outside of those academics.

Good luck with your decision. Go dawgs!

there are gazillions of pre-med here at UGA. I’m not sure what criteria are used to judge the strength of premed programs? I really don’t think that is at all important down the stretch. Being in honors is a huge help since if are initative and look for the right opportunities, the staff in honors can help you quite a lot in pursuing your endeavors (internship placements, fellowships etc). Intro premed in UGA is crowded and competitive, but i guess thats true anywhere. Keep in mind that the workload in uga is much lighter than tech, and i think, to an extent less competitive than tech (UGA student body tends to be more outgoing and party more). You should also want to picture yourself here in Athens. The student body here at UGA is vastly different from Tech.
