Is anyone else like me in that they are above the averages and standards of Georgia State and yet slightly below the averages and standards for University of Georgia? I'm finding it hard to find a college in between these in-state.

I have a 3.41 UW GPA, 3.78 W
SAT: 1820 (630 W, 600 CR, 590 M), 1190 CR+M
ACT: 27
Class rank: 188/506

10 AP courses (As and Bs in all) and all honors/accelerated. I've gotten 3 Cs in math which brings the GPA down as well as my chance at UGA.

I've already been accepted to Georgia State and hoping for an acceptance to UGA.

I want to know if there is a good in between college I just haven't found yet. What I like about both is their status as research universities and their public college titles. I also prefer medium-large campuses and student body.

My only qualms about GSU was the 48 acre campus, the city, the lower standards in comparison to UGA. On the other hand, I believe I'm in the low range for UGA acceptance so it's really all just a toss-up.

Any opnions would be much appreciated for an in between student like myself!

The only public GA alternative I can think of is Georgia College and State University although it’s not a research university, nor does Midgeville even approximate Athens, let alone ATL. It’s a medium sized, mostly residential school with a very nice campus (still the same size as GSU, but definitely doesn’t feel like the school since there’s no city). It is much more politically conservative than Georgia State.

The other GSU, Georgia Southern, has a largely residential student body, although I know little else about it, besides that the student body tends to be extremely socially and politically conservative. I have no idea how its academics compare to Georgia State.

If the deadlines for the schools hasn’t passed, you’ll get into both with little difficulty.

I hope you get accepted to UGA, too, and I think your chances are decent. You sit within the middle 50% ranges of the SAT scores and ACT scores at UGA, and your weighted GPA is definitely in the range that they admit. Most UGA admits are in the top quarter of their high school class, though.

Georgia Southern immediately came to mind - the average student is a little more competitive than the average Georgia State student. I know the deadline hasn’t passed; my younger sister-in-law is applying there too and the deadline is in May. The general perception is that Southern > State.

I also agree with the recommendation for GCSU - it’s billed as Georgia’s public liberal arts college, a medium-sized school in a suburban area. The students have higher average test scores and GPAs than Georgia State’s - comparable to Georgia Southern. The University of North Georgia (formerly North Georgia College & State University) also has a student body that, by grades and test scores, is a little more competitive than GSU’s. But Dahlonega’s not a very exciting place to be, lol. I’m not so sure about the deadlines for both of those schools, but I’m pretty sure that they are relatively late as well (April to May).

The other choices that came to mind (Armstrong Atlantic, in Savannah; Valdosta State, in Valdosta; Kennesaw State, in Kennesaw; and Columbus State, in Columbus) are actually quite comparable to Georgia State as far as selectivity goes, but not as far as reputation.

A number of my Oxford classmates took summer classes at VSU, and KSU and all said they were a joke compared to Oxford of Emory courses. A midrange UGA applicant would likely feel frustrated at those schools.

Thank you both so much for the responses! I considered both GCSU and Georgia Southern previously but thought they were below GSU. After your comments and insight I am definitely thinking of applying to both.

I’m pleasantly surprised that GCSU and Georgia Southern have higher averages than GSU and yet GSU is the research university.

I think it doesn’t hurt to apply and visit. Make sure to attend some classes that you would be likely to take. Consider that two schools with the same ACT range may have very different academic atmospheres. Particularly at larger schools, the students may divide themselves up academically, so that in certain classes and majors, you’re surrounded by a different caliber of kids.

That’s mostly because the overwhelming majority of GCSU and Southern students are richer and whiter than the average State student. Georgia State is designed to serve the working population of Atlanta which means it gets huge numbers of students from some of the lowest scoring demographic groups, while Southern and GCSU serve primarily white students who are wealthy enough to afford to live on campus. I’m not sure what effects, if any, that has on the general level of academics.

Keep positive! I applied Early to UGA with a 1890 SAT, 10 APS, 3.7 school GPA but 3.4 UGA GPA…I got deferred. So I reapplied and wrote hap hazard essays. Once I realized I could not afford OOS tuition, I regretted how I treated my UGA application. To my surprise, I was admitted on thursday with the February decisions, and I thought my GPA would keep me from getting in period. (I had one C). So don’t fret! Good luck!

The only school I applied to out of high school was GSU. I didn’t really fit well, so I transferred to UGA. Pretty straight forward process. They are both excellent schools, that well qualified students should have no problem getting admitted to, it just depends on which atmosphere you like more.

By no stretch of the imagination can Milledgeville be characterized as “suburban.” Georgia College is a fine school nevertheless. But the region is “Middle Georgia,” which is very different from the Kennesaw area or even Athens.

@handrews3 I am definitely going to transfer to UGA. I’m currently at GSU and don’t like it at all. My ideal school would be lots of students, great football team, amazing social scene, college town (basically UGA). Are you liking the switch to UGA?

@LakeWashington Visited Georgia College and wasn’t too impressed. I’m just not one for small schools with no football team haha.

In all, I have all A’s at GSU right now and plan to transfer for next fall to UGA. It’s now just a matter of time. It kind of stinks having all your friends at UGA and seeing all of the fun they’re having but, I know I’ll be there soon!
