ugh.. A chance thread... I guess?

So I'm not really one for chance threads... but I really have NO idea what Rice is like admissions wise. I'm not asking if I'll get in or not (but if you want to take a shot at it, go for it), but I am asking if I fit or are near the average "Rice" student.

First generation white male from Virginia
WGPA: 4.5/4.6
SAT: 1380/1600, 2050/2400 (780CR, 600M, 670W)
SAT II: 720USH, 700Spanish, 690Lit (not stellar, but above the averages for Rice, if I read correctly)
Top 7% of my class (would be top 1% if not for my freshman year)

7 APs total (2 junior year, 5 senior year) - USH4, Psych5, Bio, USGov, Spanish Lang, English Lit, Studio Art 2D

All honors courses except math.

I do a lot of generic leadership. I work in a lot of generic clubs. I have some generic awards (best Chemistry and English student in my graduating class) But beside those:

I started a writing center at my high school.

I campaigned and managed a team of volunteers as a precinct captain for the Obama campaign (I wrote my main essay about this).

I attended my stat's Governor's Language Academy (Governor's School) for Mandarin.

My Commonapp essay, as well as my main Rice essay (the one about what you can contribute) were both excellent. The other really short essays were kind of.. bleh.

My recommendations, I hear, were excellent, but I have not read them.

I interviewed and it well, but was a tad awk (plastic surgeon).

I got into UNC OOS, if that helps?

Thanks!

Are you in-state or OOS?
OOS applicants have a better chance than in-state.

Rice has a reputation of rejecting overqualified applicants in Texas for less-qualified applicants from OOS

:/

I'm from Virginia.

I think I've seen you somewhere before? UChicago board, maybe?

The only weak spot I see on your application is your 600 score on the math section of the SAT. Other than that, you're definitely qualified for Rice.

Nope, never thought of applying to chicago :P
I'll tell you you have a better chance than most kids :]

a 2050 is pretty low by Rice's standards.

The average SAT for Rice nonathletes not applying to the music school or architecture school is like a 2160.

For applicants or admits?

I'm sorry, but your math score seems defenseless. Most admitted Rice students had either a 680 or over on the mathematics. Just retake the Math part only and omit other sections and then you'll be at least on the line of getting accepted, which is better than now.

As for the math - I've never been good at math. It's something where, even if I try, I'm still fundamentally retarded.

I'm hoping Rice will see the fact that I've gotten A+s in all of my math classes (there is a huge difference between normal and honors at my school - I admit I couldn't handle honors, yet I have the highest grade in my AP Bio class... go figure) and see that while I try at math, I'm just not the best at it. I'm above their 75% for reading.

The major I applied for is Philosophy, which is heavy in logic, but not math-based.

I'm also the captain of the academic team. We are district champions. Regionals are soon.

I took courses at my local community college and received As in both (Philosophy and Filmmaking).

Does being first-generation pull any weight at Rice like it does at public institutions?

RD deadline was Jan. 1st o.O... Am i missing something?....

Yeah. I have no idea what you're talking about, Shazheng. I applied in December.
