Ugh Deferred :[

So I got a letter on Friday stating that I've been deferred at the University of Denver.
This was a school I easily should have gotten into, easily.
I know other people who got in with way lower ACT, GPAs, and minimal to NO extracurricular activity. I honestly don't know what to do at this point, my application has been thrown back into the RD pool, but I just don't understand why I wasn't accepted in the first place. I emailed one of the admissions counselors and all she told me was that their EA applicant pool increased by 60% and that it was "Extremely selective", I hate being lied to by schools especially since I know other people who have gotten in who wouldn't be considered better than their peers.

How were you lied to?

I was told that the process was extremely selective, but the admitted students I know of weren't necessarily the best of the best.

Do you want to go to the University of Denver? If so, perhaps you can do something to demonstrate your interest, like send an updated transcript after this quarter or semester ends.

College admissions can be a "crapshoot." Sometimes it seems to us that there is no rhyme or reason for the results. I hope you get into the school of your dreams.

I do, it was my top choice.
I plan to send a letter expressing my desire to go there, but I don't know what else to do.

Yeah I just wish there was an exact reason for the deferral, it would've made it less shocking.

Get excellent grades and send in your updated transcript so they know you're serious. Also, a letter is a great idea.

yeah. they probably assumed that they must be your safety, and that they didn't want to wast a spot on you. (i you were really so much better than the people they did accept)

I got deferred from them too. It was my fourth deferral lol.

maybe those kids did deserve it. you cant possibly know everything about them to determine that they were undeserving of getting in.

Tons of kids at my school are getting deferred left and right from schools that they were overly qualified for. We have the hardest year to apply so I think colleges are just waiting to see who else ends up applying. So many people means so many options. They are looking at the big picture and only taking the extreme best early. It's actually more competitive early at most places thatn people assume.

johnwill324 has a valid point. If you are in the top 20% or so of applicants, it can be assumed by the admissions officer that you will likely be accepted by a few higher ranked schools.

What is the Adcom to do? They are measured in part by their yield, that is, the % of accepted students who matriculate. If the adcom has no idea from your application that their University is your 1st choice, then accepting you would likely lead to your rejection of them for a higher ranked school, and their yield % goes down.

Did you, in your original application, express your strong desire (and reasons for it) to attend U of Denver? I don't know much about UoD early period admissions, but I assume theirs is "non-binding early action", and not a binding admission contract?

Well I emailed the admissions counselor, and this is what she told me :
"Thank you for your email and your continued interest in DU. We had a very competitive pool of students who applied during our Early Action time period - almost 60% more than last year at this time. Because we are still looking for entering first year class of around 1150 students, we have become even more selective in our admission process. For students that were deferred, we will reconsider your application along with the students who apply during the Regular Decision time period, so the best thing to do would be to send us any updated information that will help us with our decision. We would love to see your 7th semester of grades and any new test scores if you've taken them again. Also, we would love to know that you are still interested and I would be happy to speak to you more when I return from vacation on January 6th. Thanks and enjoy the rest of your break."

I don't know, I had friends who were beyond qualified for DU compared to me and they got in, so I don't know if it's "wasting a spot" on me, although if it were true that would be an extremely flattering statement.

So I'm really hoping Regular Decision works out, but its so discouraging to get deferred in the first place.

TheBlackLantern - The kids I speak of had no extracurricular activities, low test scores and GPAs, I'm assuming their essays (which one of them wrote in an hour, I spent three weeks) had to be spectacular and unique.

DunninLA - The Common App essay prompt wasn't exactly a place I could express my interest in DU, but I plan to write a letter expressing my desire now.
And yes the EA is non-binding.
