Ugh...essays

Ok, so does anyone know the big secret to the 'why do you want to transfer here' essay? Are they looking for essays based more on the student's passion to attend the school, or do they want you to sit and actually explain your reasons (however boring they may be) for transferring?

I think it all depends on your writing. Even if your reasons for transferring might be boring, you can still try to present them in an interesting fashion. I am going to be specific when I write mine and explain why the University attracts me, but I am going to try to write creatively and thoughtfully, so it isn't too dry.

they want you to explain the reasons why you want to attend the college. The way you present those reasons will determine whether it is a good or bad essay.

Thanks.

I also wrote about why the university attracted me, so hopefully it works out.

hey i hate to jump a thread, but since its on the subject: how long are u guys makin ur "why i want to transfer" essays and the "personal statements?"

Mine's supposed to be 500 words, and I think it's almost exactly at 500.

Schools already know about their statistics and reputation. For the most part, what you repeat from their websites are of little interest to the admission readers. Afterall, they go through thousands of essays that states these various facts.

Instead, I would focus on why I am a good fit for the school. What are the skills, experience, talents, etc. that I have that will add to or improve the student body. I would also focus on the major and why it interest me. I woiuld state whether there is a reknown faculty member that I would like to study with. Finally, I would include a short paragraph about what my career plans are after college and what I plan on doing with a degree in my particular major. Be short and succint and keep your essays positive. Do not, I repeat, DO NOT focus on a negative experience (unless you learned something from it) or a bad grade or class.

These are the things I focused on in my essay and I was accepted into Berkeley.

This essay could not be easier...quit trying to guess what they want to read..that is the biggest problem with most peoples essays.

Here is my one very simple tip: Just answer the question.

Get a tape recorder, and answer the question as though a friend from your HS just asked you. Then write that answer down and smooth it out...boom! Done.
