@Nuclear: Seems similar at my school! Only one kid got accepted–and he is a NOTORIOUS cheater; doesn’t really deserve it–and about a billion very smart, deserving kids got waitlisted–including my friend who is a Regents finalist at Berkeley, the boy who will likely be Val, etc. It’s pretty ridiculous how many they waitlist!

3 Wait listed students from our high school- 2 excellent IB students and the best AP student with a 2400. One other IB student rejected. The wait-listing seems out of hand.

I got waitlisted as well! I have good stats (from what I can tell), and strong extracurriculars, and I’ve visited the school and had an on campus interview. It was one of my favorites so I’m bummed. I did however apply pre-med and as other said I wonder if that made a difference.

Does anyone know tips on making that “waitlisted” into an acceptance? I know everyone says to call the school but what exactly do you tell them…Hi my name is _____ and I love WashU"?

Thanks :)

^It might help if your guidance counselor/head of guidance made a call saying how interested you were in the school, you never know.

In addition to having your guidance counselor call the school, you might consider writing a letter expressing your interest and updating WashU with any additional accomplishments since the time or application. If you haven’t done anything new, don’t worry; just write about your interest in the school, and perhaps, what you can contribute based on your interests.

I got waitlisted, too! I feel slightly better knowing I’m not alone.

I called the admissions office earlier and my counselor told me that they had a huge freshman class last year, so they didn’t take anyone off the waitlist. But this year, they accepted a much smaller number of applicants and waitlisted a ton of people just to be safe. He said that he was almost certain they’d be taking kids off the waitlist and accepting them into the Class of 2015.

Keep hope alive, guys!

Wash U admissions baffles me.
I was accepted, but I’ve seen so many kids with equal or better stats getting waitlisted.
PLEASE don’t view your decision as a foreshadowing of decisions to come!
SO many people who get waitlisted at WUSTL get into the very best schools. Earlier today someone who got into MIT EA was posting about getting waitlisted from WUSTL…and that’s just one example.

@20more and @Cubsfan15, I was waitlisted with stats almost exactly like yours. Normally, WashU takes a lot of students from my school, but then again, I didn’t do a campus visit or interview.

It would be really nice if WashU (or any college) would let you know how many other kids are on the waitlist.

Only disappointed whens seeing clearly less qualified applicants in the decision topics haha. Otherwise I don’t really care about getting waitlisted.

My brother is a sophmore at Stanford, and he was also admitted to WashU. BUT, he said he was having a discussions with his classmates at Stanford and they were discussing what other schools they applied to. He said all of his friend that applied to WashU were waitlisted and he was the only one who actually was admitted.

If you were waitlisted, this is no acurate indication of other college decisions to come.

Actually there’s 2 accepted now. The waitlisted ones (including me) in rank were 2, 8, 9, 13, 20 something, and this other guy I don’t know his rank. Accepted was rank 3, but he also got accepted to Cambridge so no big surprise there. The big surprise was this girl who was accepted, AND she got a scholarship. Easily lower rank than everyone else, and it’s not like she has some superstar ec’s or anything. Affirmative action at its finest though.

Congratulations to everyone who got accepted. You deserve it!

I am not going to accept the waitlist spot. It is kind of sad ending for me.
Wash U was my first college visit, first interview and first college info session.

My D was waitlisted too. 35 ACT (35.5 super scored), 1550 CR/M on SAT, 4.0 u/w GPA, 4 & 5 on all APs, with loads of ECs … like most people applying I’m sure. She showed interest … we visited, she interviewed, and she applied for multiple merit awards. So, I think THIS kind of situation is what raises the TUFTS Syndrome chatter, right? She will be turning down the Waitlist Offer since last year they took ZERO people from the list and this year they’re accepting less students due to last years large class size. My D is OK with it, since she’s already settled on a different school mentally and is waiting for her decision at Rice and Vandy, but when we read the 2015 decisions thread, there seems to be no rhyme or reason why she would get the waitlist. For those that had WashU as their #1 choice, I can understand how frustrated you must feel. Congratulations to all those that got in, you will LOVE the school!

How come? I accepted it just because you never know what might happen!

What’s Tufts Syndrome?

Eh, I got waitlisted; only have a 34 though on the ACT…but… I applied for Computer Science…I’ve never heard of St.louis’s comp sci program ever… Is it even ranked in the top 40?

Tufts syndrome is basically a school waitlisting applicants that it expects will be admitted and go to a more pretigious school (i.e overqualified applicants).

This is supposedly done to protect a school’s yield - the percentage of students who accept the university’s offer of admissions.

BTW, for those who have said interest doesn’t matter, Wash U is pretty up front that it does factor interest into account. Sure, there will always be applicants who get in without visiting or interviewing, but just because they don’t reject every applicant who skips the visit or interview doesn’t mean it’s not a factor.

I got waitlisted as well. How does the deposit thing work though? I know WashU’s FAQ talked about it, but it wasn’t very detailed. Do colleges let you forfeit the deposit after May 1? And will WashU not be giving out financial aid information until several weeks after May 1 as well?

To the comp sci poster, the admissions office doesn’t factor your projected major into their decisions much at all. Definitely the school that you’re applying to, but not the major.
