UGH, why do my grades SUCK?

bleh. here we go! from a wealthy, large, pretty competitive public school in massachusetts. :0

GPA: 3.244uw/3.8w (-_- I'm probably still in top 25% though, our school goes by weighted GPA & I've taken the HARDEST courseload possible, graduating with 6 APs, most students who even take APs take about 2-3 total)

APs:
- chemistry
- european history
- english
- enviromental science
- french
- calc ab

SAT: 2200 [720v 760m 720w]

SAT IIs:

chemistry (780)

math iic (770)

taking another two probably next year.

ECs: (probably the strongest part of my app along with good SAT scores?)

ART PORTFOLIO. I've won a few national & inter-state awards, as well as winning yearly art prizes and such from school. Also been in many art shows/festivals, work chosen for publications, etc.

COMMUNITY SERVICE. I probably do waaay more then the average applicant, lol. I have 500+ hours of work, ranging from tutoring needy kids to volunteering at a local hospital, shadowing doctors, whatnot. I especially love working with children: one of the reasons I want to be a pediatrician! CC clubs I've been in are PALS (tutoring very bright kids who don't have the teachers to help them - director), MOST (charity walks and founds), SLC (school relating funding), Red Cross Club (raising funds for victims, making stuff for war veterans), etc.

LITERARY MAG INTERNSHIP. Does this count as community service? I did this for about two years, ran an entire magazine for middle school kids with my friend (professionally though, we had a supervisor). I did all the design work and layouting (more art related stuff!)

I have other little clubs, a few sports and music related things, academic teams and such, but I feel as those are my most important :]

the LIST ;

Tufts - applying ED
Brandeis
Boston College
UMich - Ann Arbor
Boston University
Syracuse
Northwestern
UMass - Amherst
UConn
U of R
Case Western (?)
Cornell: Architecture (spur of the moment thing?! no way in hell will i get in, but yeah. will being a girl w/ very good art credentials help me? i can get amazing art recs, all my art teachers LOVE me hehe)

I know it's a long shot at Tufts, seeing my really weak GPA (but our school is DEATHLY with grading, ack)

How likely are my chances at these schools, and can you add any others if I'm looking for a nice medium-big sized suburban campus with good studio art classes, good for premed or architecture (possibly business)?

thank you :)

Tufts is a reach, but if you apply early, you still have somewhat of a chance. If you really love the school, I say go for it.

Brandeis is a match, Michigan is a high match, BU and Syracuse are safeties, Northwestern is a big reach, you'll get into UMass with your eyes closed, Rochester is a match, UConn is a safety, Case Western is a match, and Cornell is a big reach.

aw, thanks :] yeah, i figured cornell and nu were gonna be tough... i thought brandeis and michigan and case were going to be reaches too :(

bump a bump!

Tufts - applying ED - reach but you have a solid chance RD
Brandeis - good match
Boston College- slight reach
UMich - Ann Arbor - sorry, but this will be a reach. Very few people get in with under 3.5 Michigan GPA. The 25-75% is like 3.6-3.9 Mich GPA and your Mich GPA is likely to be lower than your UW GPA.
Boston University - safe match
Syracuse - safety, possibly money
Northwestern - big reach
UMass - Amherst - safety, possibly money
UConn - safety, possibly money
U of R - good match
Case Western (?) - good match
Cornell: Architecture - reach

If you can get strong reccomendations from teachers you have a good shot at most of the schools.

yes, i can get many good recs :)

You will have a better chance at Tufts if you apply ED than if you apply RD.

bump a de dump la ~

Umich would be a match if you lived instate.

I think you have a shot at most of the colleges on your list.

cornell arch is definitely not reach...i'd say safety

I think Case is a good school, but I don't know how much of a fit it would be for you.

bneg, you crazy??? its cornell, no offense, but you prolly won't get it with a 3.2 uw gpa.

Disregard what bneg says...

really? why is cornell considered a saftey? (i highly doubt it but i'd like your opinion behind your statement, hehe :) do not a lot of girls go into architecture? maybe i have hope after all! i also have a very good art portfolio, ranging from works from several years ago to now.)

i dunno, i haven't visisted case yet - but my friends who have say it's amazing (and she has similiar tastes in colleges to mine...) not sure.

You know yourself better than me. Case is just a very business and technology and medicine school, though it does have a few random liberal arts bright spots (I guess the French program is really good, for example). It just doesn't seem to be a very art-y type of school. But what do I know? I'm sure there are artists who go to Case, just like there are writers who go to MIT.

Anyway, if you have any questions, PM me (I'm a native Clevelander. Actually, I've spent the last days at Case Western for a Model UN conference).

oh i see. :] thanks! i'm going to go visit case soon, so if i have any questions, i'll be sure to contact you =)

bump!~

:) ten char ~~~ bump.

I can't believe some of the responses on this and some other threads. I think there's a bunch of newbies who still believe colleges look at the whole person. A few months on CC and reality will hit. Start by looking at each schools common data to see how many people get in to your schools who are in the top 25% of their class. It will be VERY few at many of your schools other than URMs, athletes and the other truly hooked.

actually, for most of my said matches from the above posters (brandeis, case, umich), my gpa is very close or above to average gpa accepted from our school ;) top 25% at our school is pretty good, actually... i might even be in top 10-15%, not sure.

bumpbumpbump :D
