Ugliest Campuses and Prettiest Campuses

I'll second W&L - the campus, in addition to the surrounding environs, is second to none among American colleges and universities.

U of Miami is absolutely gorgeous

For me, Pepperdine, Rhode Island School of Design, Fordham, and Stanford top the list.

Indiana and UCLA rate mentions--but, for Indiana only when winter's over.

USC may look good--but since it's essentially on the edge of South Central LA, my question would be--do you really want to live on the edge of a war zone?

Ugliest--probably MIT (great school, but campus looks like a 1930s NRA project).

Oh, and for location--Pepperdine (Malibu), UC Santa Barbara, UC Santa Cruz, San Diego State, Colorado (Boulder) and NYU win.

Worst location--USC, Penn (southwest side of Philly), and Rutgers (Camden campus--where being a victim of crime is expected)

MIT probably IS an NRA project from the 30s.

Beautiful: Clemson University, Eckerd College, University of Tampa, University of Miami, College of Charleston, University of Delaware, William and Mary, University of Virginia
Ugly: Duke University, Rutgers University, University of Scranton, Drexel University, UMass - Amherst

Has anyone here ever been to the University of Georgia and/or Athens?

anybody know anything about university of michigan?

I just searched through 17 pages of this thread and not one person has mentioned Ole Miss.

That is hands down the most beautiful place I've ever been to or seen.

michigan has its nice parts and some parts that are just ok. They seem to have a strange mix of architecture types. The nicest part by far has to be their law quad. They also have an incredible engineering campus that looks like it has never been used (everything seems really new) Overall it is a decent campus.

Prettiest: Cornell, Delaware, Lafayette, and of course Penn State (The incredible amount of blue and white makes up for any of its blemishes it only has a few)

Ugly: Rutgers, Lehigh, Georgia Tech, Rider, St. Boniventure, Temple.

"I'll second W&L - the campus, in addition to the surrounding environs, is second to none among American colleges and universities."

second to UVa at least............

Two other beautiful campuses I should have mentioned--Elon and Univ of Richmond.

I didn't particularly like U of R's...but W&M and UVa are both beautiful

Colgate and Bryn Mawr are absolutely gorgeous.

And most SUNY schools don't have anything good going for their campus looks. Most of them make use of the functional box shape. And thaaaat's it. Nothing really varied. SUNY Geneseo was a bit of an exception, though-- not as boxy as some of them.

A friend of mine attends SUNY Albany and absolutely hates the campus.

What About UCSD?????

I like UCSC, Stanford, Harvard, Dartmouth, and Amherst.
How's Vassar??? I haven't been but it's my top choice right now.

Years ago, it was my niece's 1st choice too. Her mom got them lost en route to visiting the campus & they found the students not as friendly as they had hoped. She ended up deciding she'd be happier at UCDavis, which is where she ended up getting her undergrad degree instead & was very happy. She's now completing law school at UH.

can anyone comment on the beauty (or ugliness if it applies) of these campuses?: Brown, Carleton, Bowdoin

Thanks!

Brown's pretty ugly.

Lake Michigan, the lakefill, and two beaches probably make Northwestern one of the best. Sheridan road cutting through campus is a drag though.

Brown's not ugly. It's actually quite nice. It's kind of spread out, though--and I think the fact that it's right behind the Rhode Island School of Design (which is an architectural marvel) may be what the previous poster is referring to.

Can't speak to the beauty of the other two schools.

Princeton has awesome architecture and Notre Dame's campus is gorgeous as well (the golden dome and basilica are hard to beat). In terms of natural beauty, Colgate and Williams are definitely at the top of the list. Also, Swarthmore has some awesome trees and a very cool ampitheatre.
