This course builds on students’ previous service learning experiences and their understanding of the value they bring to at-risk students. It will provide students who are interested in becoming one-on-one mentors for at-risk elementary and middle school students with the knowledge and skills needed to be effective. In addition to learning how to be academic mentors, students will learn how to address social and familial concerns. Participants enrolled in this course will become better equipped to play a larger role in an at-risk student’s success. In addition to the class meeting time, students must be available to work at an elementary school one afternoon per week In addition to purchasing books, students must pay ~$20 for a background check.
Available mentoring times are:

Academic mentoring can be a powerful way to build bridges between college students and children, families, and schools across the socioeconomic divide. The purpose of this course is to facilitate mentoring that will open doors to college/career readiness for a target group of local high school students. Scholarly research and readings will guide our class discussions and will be incorporated with mentoring experiences in reflective writing assignments. . In addition to the class meeting time, students must be available to work at a school one afternoon per week In addition to purchasing books, students must pay ~$20 for a background check.</p>

Mentoring for Elementary Children: Opening up the World of Reading

This seminar is designed to provide an opportunity to develop the knowledge and skills to mentor/tutor a struggling elementary age student in improving his/her reading ability. Reasons why some children have difficulty learning to read will be explored, as well as techniques to identify a reader’s strengths and weaknesses and strategies for helping the student overcome difficulties. Students taking this class will be paired with a primary aged child for one-to-one mentoring. In addition to the class meeting time, students must be available to work at a school one afternoon per week In addition to purchasing books, students must pay ~$20 for a background check.
Available mentoring times are:
Mondays: 3:00-5:00 Wednesdays: 3:00-5:00
Tuesdays: 3:00-5:00 Thursdays: 3:00-5:00</p>

<p>Yes, section 005. We am wondering if personal transportation is needed and how much, if any, time is spent outside the scheduled class time and the tutoring session time.</p>

<p>mine did a class like this, maybe not the same exact one, though.</p>

<p>did not require a lot of time except the weekly trip to the school. your student would probably be able to arrange to ride with another student.</p>

<p>My son did the READ program (last spring) offered thru Honors College. The only difference in the READ program and the UH 105 is that honors college credit is earned thru UH 105. While my son did not earn credit, he thoroughly enjoyed the experience. He went to a local elementary school 1 day a week for 1-2 hours and “tutored” children in reading. He had 2 students each visit. He was touched by their eagerness to learn and their appreciation of his time. He was also humbled by the experience. I know he would definitely recommend the class/program.</p>
