uh! admitted for spring semester

what's the point of getting in for spring semester?

if i'm admitted for this those that mean i'm guranteed a spot for spring semester or does that mean if i don't earn the grades at community school i will keep attending cc school?

i know 2 of my friends are in the same situation so are a lot of students offered this decision?

is anyone in the same situation as i am?

this really runied everything..

Yes, you need a certain gpa to be admitted in the Spring, think of it this way, it's better to get spring than nothing at all.

I don't know the gpa you will need to keep. I asked our DS about the freshman connection over xmas break and he said as long as they get a certain gpa than they are automatically admitted in the spring and become full time. This of course was in regards to those who do the freshman connection. I don't know how attending a cc affects entrance.

As for MD Spring Admit, is there the option to attend another college for the fall semester, and then come in as a transfer in the spring? My friend was admitted to Spring, and I'm curious.

I believe the letter says you can go to another school, get a job, travel, whatever. My D would probably go to a local school and then start second semester at UMD; I guess she'll have to be very careful about selecting courses that will transfer to UMD.

January admission is an acceptance. There is no fall GPA requirement. Students can choose to take classes in the fall to stay on track for a 4 year graduation or not.

My D was admitted to the spring semester. I have been researching Freshman connection. You can enroll for the fall, take a full load, grad on time, rush greek life in spring, attend all student activities. You take all classes with other frosh connect students. They say that these kids do better academically the first semester by half a grade. The down side for an out of stater is that you can not live on campus. You must live in an apartment. Classes are late afternoon and early evening. Class sizes are a fraction of reg. frosh classes. The experience is slightly different than usual frosh dorm life.
i would like my daughter to do it. She is hesitant. UM is a great school. I hope she sees the light.
if anyone has knowledge of apartment life around school, please comment

I got spring admit too, and so did a friend at my school. I want to do Freshman Connection but my mom isnt convinced about letting me live off-campus as a freshman even though its only one semester...any ideas/sugestions?

I would suggest having your parent speak with the Freshman connection office at Maryland. I spoke with someone today. It made me feel better about the alternative. Now, I need my daughter to get excited about the prospect. I would like her to meet other students considering Fresh connection. I think if she met a potential roommate, she would feel different. It is hard as we live in Los Angeles.

socaldad how did the conversation with the freshman connection office go?

yea i guess the spring admissions is better than nothing.

i am also considering freshman connection though
finding housing will be such a hard task.
maybe i'll do community college for the first semester.
i asked my guidance counselor today and he said if i feel like not taking any classes during fall, i'll still be admitted to spring. of course i'll be taking classes some how but is this true? like nothing i do during fall can screw up my spring admissions?

sorry for all the questions, i just never have the time to call the admissions office :(

m1ns0o, i dont think finding housing will be that tough...or that's what I`m hoping at least...maryland has an office for helping us find offcampus housing/roomates.

My conversation was very good. They explained the small class size. The fact that Connection students tend to do better grade wise because of the focused attention. You can still go to clubs, sporting events, and any campus function. Can also rush greek in spring with other frosh. You take all your classes with other frosh conn. students. Downside is you are not meeting all the frosh in general classes. you miss out on Dorm experience and social life. I assume if you live with 4 other students in a large apt, you can meet people thru each other. Any other questions?

DS knows several freshman connection students b/c of social events. Fresh connection kids still go to dorm parties, greek week and football games, which is how they meet up. ALso remember they move into the dorms in spring, so it is not as if they are new transfers as a sophomore or jr when it is harder to make new friends.

My D was accepted for spring semester. When would she do her orientation. She probably won’t be doing FS since we live in Boston, and she has never lived away from home.

@Muffy333 ~ UMD has a link where you enter your college name if you attend somewhere else fall semester and it lists all the courses that transfer to UMD. Even all Montgomery College credits DO NOT transfer, so be careful.

[Transfer Credit Center | Home Page](http://www.tce.umd.edu/)

Another thought–I’ve only known two kids that have gone through the Freshman Connection. My daughter’s friend did it last semester and went to the games with her, parties, etc. He just hated the fact that he commuted and wasn’t experiencing the college experience in the dorms, etc. The classes are usually longer and later in the day. He couldn’t wait till spring semester began. He did luck out with a great dorm situation surprisingly–has a great suite in South, I believe. I would say if you REALLY want to go to UMD, then it is only one semester to miss out on and you will have 3 1/2 more years of the college experience living on/near campus.

Just a few small things… (I don’t really know much about the program, I just wanted to pass on this links)

Freshman Connection has orientation in the summer too, apparently.

There’s currently another thread about Freshman Connection, if anyone wants to check it out: (http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-maryland-college-park/857602-could-someone-please-explain-me-about-freshman-connection-program.html</a>)

There’s also the Freshman Connection website: ([Office Of Extended Studies - University of Maryland](http://www.summer.umd.edu/index.php?slab=freshmen-connection))

LOL! I just realized the Muffy333 post was dated 02/09!!! Oh well, I hope the info will help someone else.
