Uh oh I didn't get into any housing!!

I got a letter today that said they're all filled up! I'm kinda freaking out... I applied in the first half of April, was that really too late? Would they shove me in Gregory or Peabody since they are the biggest, or in some unpopular dorm (I don't know which ones have a bad rep).

1 more thing, has anyone taken the ALEKS test online yet? I took BC Calc last year and did pretty decently, did you guys have a good shot at 60%?

Did u really?

call or e-mail them and ask if they space ANYWHERE.

i emailed them last year and they told me they had snyder(substance free) and lar's non-visitation wing. i stupidly chose the later. DONT DO THAT! i don't know about snyder. but right now, i wouldn't worry too much. i had a lot of friends that got off the temp. list as the summer went on. even if you live in temp. housing, i heard the floor lounges weren't that bad and my friends that lived there didn't mind it, it was just annoying to move out later in the year.

call and make your demands as harshly as possible. I was in the same situation, had sent my letter of intent like the last week of April. First off, u shoulda sent your application back in December or Jan. but thats besides the point.

I'd call and be real aggressive about it, scream even if you have to. Apparently that's the only way to get things taken care of if you're dealin with undealable people, which is by coming at them in an aggressive and hostile manner. Yea, I know it sounds bad, but talking quitely and being good-too-shoes about it won't get you anywhere.

You've gotta let them know that you won't stand for it, you're payin thousands of dollars to them and they can't find an accomdating residence for you? Or if you don't feel comfortable, let one of your parents make the complaint b/c maybe they will listen to an adult more than an 18 yr old

People shouldn't be paying thousands of dollars in room and board to be living in temp. housing. That's just ridiculous.

i thought you get like half off if you live in temp housing.

So bears you think if I emailed them (which I'd be most comfortable with, I guess) it wouldn't work out too good? Cause I mean it IS my fault I applied in April.. and if I yelled at them for something that was my fault it seems kinda
unreasonable.

But yeah I'm gonna call them anyway myself and tell them to put highest priority on Gregory, or something. Out of curiousity did you get your way since you were in the same situation?

cyrone:

Well yea, that's the difference between your situation and what mine was last year. I had applied by Dec. 15th(which is when they suggest you apply by) and you say you applied in April. I didn't send my acceptance until like Apr. 25th. So I actually had more of an arguement, but yea, u did apply late so you kinda got your punishment for that.

But regardless, sending emails doesn't put as much emphasis as making a call and expressing your frustrations. But then again, you may be low on their waiting list. I'm not sure how it works.

hey i'm in the same situation.. but i couldn't help but apply during late feb.. cause i didn't even get accepted until feb 16 :[ should i really call and complain?

i really dont think "complaining" is going to do much, its more like asking them to see if they can you in any way. they're not obligated to magically somehow find you a room in the exact dorm you want, its only if they can. if you show attitude they're not going to be all scared, it'll probalby just annoy them and motivate them less to help you.

No, we've been in the situation a couple times where we needed to show the school some attitude and believe it or not, they will budge b/c the bottom line is they want your money and they will make sure you are happy and don't leave their institution.

And if you are persistent they may get tired of it and budge that way as well.

2 times that happened, first with housing and second time with trying to get a class that the ECON Dept. wouldn't give and having to go up to the Asst. Dean/Dean's Office...

The school expects you to just cater to their desires but you have to force your way into getting your way or else they will never care. You're just 1 person in the large scheme of things. Make your voice be heard.

what i'm saying is dont be so picky. just ask if they have a dorm anywhere that has some space left. if they're full, they're full but there is a chance that a spot can pop up out of nowhere if someone decided to cancel their contract. they can't just build a new room, if its full its full.
the chance of getting into the six pack now i.e. the most popular dorm on campus is just about impossible.

That depresses me... greatly. Isn't it also the biggest dorm on campus..? I mean ISR I can understand but TWO six packs are far-fetched?

i'm in the same boat as you guys are.. except worse. I got off the waitlist on May 14, and wasn't able to apply for housing until the 19th or something. I've talked to a few people about temp housing, and here is what i've heard:

-half off housing fees- that is 4,000 dollars
-it's crowded, because you have 4 other roommates, but just go to the library to study
-4 other roommates isn't all bad- thats four other people you know!
-they will move you to a regular dorm after the semester, when people start dropping out.

Soo it sucks not knowing, but there are both good and bad things about temp housing if you get it.

Howdy folks,
believe me, you guys got it way better than me - I don't even know where I have been assinged. I'm on vacation in India since June 5th and here's UIUC's reply to my request to be told my housing assignment...

"Unfortunately, we cannot give non-international student's their assignments. When are you returning from India?

Sincerely,"

that was on June 18th...

what should I do - make an expensive phone call from here to try again? or just suffer it out till I get back :( ?

Thanks!

Look, I wouldn't worry about it that much. I got a letter just like that because I accepted on the last day before the deadline since I was doing college visits right up until the last weekend before the deadline. Didn't you notice that the letter stated quite assuredly that "WE WILL HAVE SPACE FOR YOU"?

Since almost all juniors and seniors live in private housing, I'm guessing that a lot of them take out university housing contracts too just in case, since it's only $100. Once they back out, there'll be lots of room(s). And that's not even all. They also reserve a lot of rooms for their dorky learning communities, which if they don't get filled up, will give the rooms back to be given to people just looking for a room.

DON'T stress out about it until at least the 24th of july when they PROMISED to tell you online. If at that time they say you're screwed, well, that's a license to be ****y.

^ Heh that sounds good, the thing is though, apparently even people that picked housing in February got kicked out.. and I applied in April. I'm not holding my breath to get a good spot. Maybe I'm accepting my fate in a tight room with 3 other dudes..

I just got the letter today, I actually got into Hopkins Hall in Gregory Drive!!! I don't know what kind of rep Hopkins has, but Gregory was my #1 pick and it must have been some kind of miracle to have gotten into it. Yes, I DID call them up, but I kinda pussied out and I doubt it had any effect on the pick. Sad, cause a couple of my friends got into PAR yet I still get into a six-pack..

Only thing is it's 3 people, which is ok I really have no preference as to how many ppl I dorm with really. Anyone know how Hopkins Hall is..?

My son got assigned to a triple at Hopkins also. Maybe you'll be roommates?
