uh oh!

i got pretty sick as a junior last spring during the months of sats and ap exams, and my most important grades dropped some. i'm applying to a couple of insanely competitive schools. you think they'll take my sickness into account? it was horrible timing, since that's the most important time of all of high school. a lot of the "data" they use to evaluate how much rigor someone can handle got totally skewed because i could barely get out of bed during those months, let alone even coming remotely close to studying. i'm worried that while they won't hold getting sick against me, they can't be sure that i can handle their academics (which i personally know i can).

also, how do i go about presenting the information that i was really sick during that time? i don't wanna be asking for pity, saying "i know all my scores sucked, but i was sick! just pretend that they were way way higher! i swear, they woulda been if i hadn't been sick!" sats i can retake once, but the ap exams and grades are a one time only thing. i want to explain without coming across in the wrong way.

advice?

I don’t think it would come across in the wrong way if you told them you got really sick. It depends on what kind of illness you had, but this happens to a lot of people and the adcoms will probably take your sickness into account.

Tell them. It should be evident something was going on if your scores and grades aren’t in line with each other.

it was mono. the thing with that though is that TONS of people get it, but everyone gets it at different levels. some people don’t even know they have it, and others, like me, become a total wreck for months. i’m worried that the adcoms will say “oh, that’s normal to happen to someone in high school. no biggie”

^ ouch.

well you can retake your sats can’t you?
