When I applied to Dartmouth for Early Decision, I indicated that I plan to take 3 quarters of Physics and Japanese at a local community college on the Common App. I was accepted!

So far, I have taken these two classes for 2 quarters.

However, now that the time as come, I will be unable to take these classes for the last quarter I had intended to. High school students get lowest priority in choosing classes, and combined with budget cuts and combining of classes, there is no room for me in either class.

I take another AP Science class at school in addition to physics, and my foriegn language requirements are already satisfied by 2 other languages.

Is not having enough room an acceptable reason not to come through with what I had intended to when they accepted me? Will I get my admissions decision rescinded?

If I were you I would send an email that the person can read and respond to at their own convenience. Email would enable you to describe the situation calmly and clearly. You could close by stating that you would be happy to discuss it further by phone if they wish. If they need to do so, they will let you know.

I have the feeling that admissions officers are besieged by phone calls right now, and mostly they just interrupt people’s work.

I don’t think you have anything to worry about. Just write up what you told us in a clear and rational way, and send it to whomever you have been in contact with at Admissions.

I called my regional admissions officer and explained the situation, and she pleasantly told me that there should be no problems. She said that what they care about most is that there are no extreme changes in academic records (such as failing a class). She told me to email the admissions office.

I’ve emailed the Admissions Office, and they replied saying that they will add the update to my file.

I hope all is well!!

When would they notify me if my decision were to be rescinded? :(

“she pleasantly told me that there should be no problems”

If she said that then you will be fine. The email is just to have a written record so your application is accurate. The only person that could override your regional officer is like the dean/assistant dean/etc. and trust me they truly wouldn’t care or even notice. Have fun in Hanover and consider it a blessing you don’t have to take the class. (less work :)
