UH vs OU Petroleum Eng, Which one to choose?

First of all, let me say that I have read all the related discussions regarding Petroleum Engineering. I have been admitted to both University of Houston and University of Oklahoma Petroleum Engineering, but I cannot choose between the two. Please advice

Biased though I may be (I’m a transfer student to OU’s geology program) I firmly believe that OU offers a much better “college experience” than UH.

What’s the cost difference between ou and UH, and how much debt would each school leave you with?

no cost, I am getting VA benefits. I have a family with two kids age 10 and 4, yes I am a non-traditional student. How are Norman school districts, and the weather ( how bad the tornadoes can be?) etc…

UH just opened their petroleum engineering this year right?

UH’s ChemE program has been around for a long time, but the PetE BS program was only recently established. I just arrived in Norman and from what I can see, believe it’s a nice place to raise children. There seems to be lots of things to do for kids, and because it’s a college town, the cost of living is much lower than in Houston. I’m not sure about the strength of the public schools, but I’d imagine there are certain schools where professors send their kids to, and those are likely to be excellent.

Again, I just arrived to Norman, so I’m really not sure about the weather. But I will say that the petroleum engineering program is extremely well connected to the resource extraction industry, and a huge number of energy companies actively recruit OU students. Perhaps this is the case with UH, but I’ve never looked into it.

I would say OU because like previously stated I think OU offers more of the college experience compared to U of H.

Norman schools are great - It is by and large a very nice town to live in and the only downside appears to be the annual tornadoes. That said, OU probably has a better respected department than UH, even though I love UH dearly. (I’ve actually lived in both towns for very short periods of time)

Given that the deadline to choose a transfer school already passed, I’d be surprised if the OP hadn’t made up his mind.

But yes, after living in Norman for a couple of months, I concur that it’s an excellent place to not only raise a family but also go to college.
