I'm a recent acceptee to UT! I'm noticing that the time window to apply for UT housing started QUITE a while ago compared to other schools. Why is this? Do I have to apply for housing now? Must/Should I even though I might not go to UT?

Sorry if some of these questions seem a bit dumb, I'm just really confused by the UT handles housing.

UT has a housing shortage. Only 56% of Freshman live on campus. Housing is allotted on a first come/first served basis. People are encouraged to apply for housing (and pay a deposit) when they APPLY. So some people have been in line for housing since August, basically. There are private dorms (about which I know next to nothing), so don’t lose hope.

I was reassured that almost everyone who wants to live on campus gets a place. But I would apply NOW if you are considering UT. DS applied to 9 colleges, but we applied for UT housing as soon as they would let us, which was when he completed his application, December 1.

This is unlike ANY other school with which I am familiar, but it is the way it is.
