Uhhhh.... I have 2 ECs. Help.

I used to be involved in a lot of clubs, but I dropped a lot of them because I absolutely hated being in them. Now, all I'm in is the French club and my school's key club (leadership position). I'm planning on staying in my school's French club and key club for the rest of high school (I'm a sophomore right now), also, I'm planning on joining my school's French Honor society (it's only available to students who are in French 3 and up.)

To be honest, I'm really apathetic about most things... which is why I have really boring ECs. I'm not extraordinarily talented in any field, either. I used to be into painting, but I kind of phased out of that. Although I can say that I genuinely enjoy doing community service (I'm trying to get the Presidential Service Award, but I'm not sure how that's going to pan out yet) and learning about the French language and culture. Yep, that's about it.

I'm also going to apply for NHS and Mu Alpha Theta next year... Hope that goes well.

Do you think colleges like Berkeley, Rice, and UPenn (my reach school) would mind my lackluster ECs? I'm not sure about my rankings or anything, but I've been taking all of the Honor / AP classes that I possibly can and have only made 1 B for a semester average (Honors Bio, first semester), with the rest being As (My school only sends out our semester averages). As a sophomore, I've been scoring around the 2100 range on the SATs and I'm working to raise my score another 100 to 200 points.

Don’t worry about it. Just do what you love. You are only young once. Most schools don’t look at only one thing. It’s more of a holistic approach. In the end, it comes down to whether or not they like you as a person, and whether or not they think you would add to the community, not your quantitative traits. If you want my advice, follow your passions. That’s all.

If it makes you feel better, I’ve been playing tennis since I was about 10, and I JUST signed up for USTA. I didn’t even make the team last year. So that EC is just kind of… there. I quit debate because I hated it. I’m in a couple clubs, and trying to get back to piano. I’m also joining NHS and Mu Alpha Theta next year. Oh yea, I’m also a sophomore.

^ But thanks for the advice! Applies to me too.

Thanks for the feedback, you guys :)

Quality over quantity, depth over breadth. Congratulations. Now you’ve freed up enough time to figure out a passion or two.

I tell everyone this, but, read How to be a High School Superstar by Cal Newport.
