So would anyone here agree that the subtext of this email which i received today is that come april i should be hearing some good news? I feel like they wouldn't send this to be if I were going to be rejected.....

(i'm abbreviating it a bit.)

Dear gc414:

Thank you for completing your application to the University of Virginia. We are so excited that we are one of your schools of choice. This time is one of anticipation and anxiousness as you wait to hear where your second home will be for the next four years, and I want to take the opportunity to assist you in the weeks ahead as you make final preparations for college.

The University has become a national leader in retaining and graduating Hispanic/Latino students who are satisfied with their university experience and academic excellence. To learn more about this experience, we have matched you to a current Hispanic/Latino student who can answer your questions about academics, student life at U.Va, or just talk to you while you wait. This student can share valuable information that may help when it comes time for your college decision.

Look out for an email with the subject: "Look Hoo's Talking."

Also, please keep in mind important U.Va dates. Admission decisions are sent around April 1st. In order to receive your financial aid package and admission letter around the same time, you should have your materials submitted by March 15th (about two weeks from now).

stuff about financial aid + fafsa....

Please feel free to contact me as well if you have any questions or concerns about the admission process. The website for our office, the Outreach Office, Diversity at U.Va., Undergraduate Admission, U.Va. is very helpful and includes links to various sites related to the University and being a student here. Hang in there; April 1st will be here before you know it. Have a wonderful day and as always, my best to you and your family.

Sincerely,
Valerie Gregory
Director of Outreach; Associate Dean of Admission

I think what Dean J meant was that it is not a likely letter. It is just part of the Outreach Department trying to get students (particularly minorities if I read the letter correctly) interested in UVA. As Dean J said, likely letters have not gone out yet.

I understand that it is not a likely letter, but I’m just wondering if it’s a sign of good things to come.
And Dean J’s use of smiley faces is giving me a good feeling that it is a good sign.

That would be the greatest thing ever! Haha. Too bad none of the schools I applied to have rolling admissions, so I have no security blanket whatsoever.

well, it would kind of be a waste of resources to make a student interested in UVA (presumably, after you’ve read their application) only to reject them after “reaching out” to them. though an email such as this, while not a 100% thing since we take into account Dean J’s note that they’re still not done going through applications and haven’t made their final decisions, still seems to mean that they want to draw the recipient’s (waves) attention towards UVA (lol like i needed an email to make me like uva :D).

just my take on it after sifting through the blog and whatnot.

a rejection i could handle. a rejection after an email such as this? not so much…

gc414, just to assure ourselves a bit more, not every minority applicant with a strong application received one of these (at least according to what I know about the people at my school and where they applied). So, I’m going to say that’s a little bit more of an indication that UVA is highly considering accepting us. :)

I’m also hopeful for Monday! Although a lot of my friends did advise me that they received likely letters today. Ehhh. If I don’t get one, I guess I’ll be able to cope with it.
