I got my acceptance in the mail yesterday and I was happy but then I saw I was admitted to Letter and Sciences, undecided (?). I can't remember if I put down my major as journalism or undecided because UMD has both a communications and journalism major and I was confused. Either way, I want to be sure I can go to UMD and be in the journalism program. I do not want to enter under this undecided thing. I plan on calling tomorrow. What should I say? I believe it is a limited enrollment major and I don't know if I can get in now. Should I call with my guidance counselor? I think I will wind up at UMD and I definitely might have messed things up. Any suggestions on what to do or say?

Both are Limited Enrollment Programs and I don't think you are automatically IN either program. Possibly if your grades and test scores are high enough, you get in automatically. If not, you have to wait and see...like take certain courses first and then, if your grades are high, your offered a placement. I think you'll need to call all those programs involved...journalism, communications (which is under ARHU) AND Letters & Sciences.....and also call admissions. But I'm pretty sure just because you put a LEP down on your application, does not automatically put you in that major. Check the website about both programs and it will give you more details. Hope some of this helps.

Thanks. The communications department isn't really involved, it just confused me. My letter says 'undecided' though. If I had put down journalism wouldn't it mention something about an intended major in journalism? If I enter under Letter & Sciences, I can still go into journalism and be out in four years? Ahh I'm so confused now.

Had the same thing in my acceptance letter Friday - listed as undecided - Letters & Sciences. I initially requested Comp Sci and and Econ backup. I did not expect to get CS, especially when initially deferred from EA.

My current and desired plan is for Information Systems, which is part of the Business School. Knew I would not get in at the start, so didn't even bother listing it. Plan on taking core courses, doing well and then applying at end of Fresh year.

I believe all of the Baccalaureate programs have CORE required courses many of which you can take before you select a major.

Best thing to do until then is to go to the program page of your desired major and identify what CORE courses will help you to satisfy graduation requirements, (assuming you eventually are accepted into the limited enrollment program). While you are there on campus, you can lobby the powers-that-be in person for your admission :)

From what I've heard, the LEP programs are VERY hard to get into IF you're not in as a freshman. You can try to get in once you have completed a semster or two, but they turn away many students from these programs. On another site, it tells others if you don't have a certain sat score, you aren't getting into their program...period. I don't know if journalism is like that or not. My D. is also interested in journalism, but as a second major...that or American Studies...so I've looked into it a little. She's a dance major but she has to have something else to fall back on after graduation when she's a starving, unemployed dancer! I would call the journalism department tomorrow, if I were you. Let me know what they say...

I'm planning on having a conference call with my guidance counselor tomorrow. I can not remember if I applied to journalism and obviously didn't get in or that I put down undecided because I was confused about the comm/journalism thing. My stats aren't amazing but I would think I would get into the journalism school. 1340 SAT, 3.84 UW, lots of ec's relating to communications/journalism. Maybe I'm wrong. If I had put down undecided could they still place me in it now?

I also applied for business and my letter said letters & sciences. I don't really want to do business anymore either, but I don't want to stay in the north so I doubt I'll go to UMD. Still, I'm surprised that I got in, I only have a 2.72 UW GPA (I had a 3.2 junior year and go to private school but it's still quite surprising.) I didn't think my 1360 SAT would do enough to make up for the low GPA but I guess it did.
