UIC Computer Science or UIUC Mathematics and Computer Science

I have to decide if I want to go to UIC and major in Computer Science (ENG)
or go to UIUC and major in Mathematics and Computer Science ( in the LAS college)

I know UIUC would normally be better for Computer Science, but I'm concerned about being in the "lower level Computer science major".

Does anyone know how the "Math and CS" works?

It’s all in the selected coursework. Your Math courses would be courses that related more to CS. like:

Numerical Analysis
Numerical Linear Algebra
Optimization/Operations Research
Combinatrics
Graph Theory
Cryptology

Usually, most combined or hybrid Math/CS majors will not require all of the CS courses that the CS major requires. Having said that, it is BEST that the Math/CS major at least takes the core CS courses (required or not) that the CS majors take (Algorithms, Data Structures, Theory of Programming Languages & Operating Systems). Also due to the number of software jobs that depend on the next two areas…Database Systems and Networks should also be taken.

Don’t worry about taking the major in the Engineering college vs. the LAS college. The ONLY ones who may possibly care would be local Illinois companies with picky hiring managers. I guarantee you, the software engineering department of a company in Pennsylvania would care less.

Here you can compare the various majors at UIUC (CS, math/CS, statistics/CS):
