UIC or IIT for computer science

which is better, UIC or IIT for Computer Science? (UIC: University of Illinois at Chicago, IIT: Illinois Institute of Tech)
in terms of:

  1. academic
  2. internships
  3. better job offer
  4. social life
  5. cost of attendance
  6. campus
  7. recognition inside and out side chicago (also out side USA if you know)

Obviously IIT, in all aspects but the cost of attendance.

@mundanewarrior got 22.5k scholarship, after considering that
actually I got confused when I saw the ranking…
IIT is around 100 and UIC if i remember is around 60’s

22.5k doesn’t mean much when you compare it to the 58k COA.

60 is for Doctorate program. The overall ranking of UIC is around 150+ (USNews). But rankings are not an ultimate measure, so you should ask someone in the UIC or IIT forum.

I can give you my perspective on Illinois Tech as a long time professor of physics at the university. I won’t comment on UIC comparatively but it is also a solid choice.

  1. academic - rigorous, students are expected to work hard as the university is primarily STEM majors.

  2. internships - students have no problem getting internships, however is you are an international student it is more challenging (not just at Illinois Tech)

  3. better job offer - with over 90% of Illinois Tech students getting jobs it is pretty good bet that you will be OK in this regard (I cannot compare with UIC, but computer science students get pretty good salaries in general) but again, it is more challenging for an international student.

  4. social life - there are plenty of opportunities on the Illinois Tech campus but it mostly depends on the students themselves since there are always students who prefer to sit in their rooms and play video games when not studying. There is plenty to do in Chicago though and that goes for UIC as well.

  5. cost of attendance - that is individual. It depends on your scholarships. You need to look at both packages and see what works best for you.

  6. campus - IIT is a relatively small private school with about 3,000 undergraduates and 5,000 graduate students mostly in STEM fields, The IIT campus is compact and architecturally significant. What else do you want to know?

  7. recognition inside and out side Chicago (also out side USA if you know) - IIT is one of the [Association of Independent Technical Universities](http://theaitu.org) and is well known throughout the country in engineering and science fields (I cannot really tell about internationally but we have a lot of alumni in Europe and Asia). In computer science in particular, there has been a lot of publicity recently with a major gift having been given by the founder of a [company that was recently sold to IBM for over $1B](http://www.chicagobusiness.com/article/20160409/ISSUE01/304099994/gladwins-1-3-billion-cleversafe-win-could-change-the-face-of-chicago-tech) and which employed a bunch of IIT students and graduates while it was starting up. [This gift will be the basis for a significant fund raising effort](Cleversafe Founder Chris Gladwin Donates $7.6 Million to Help Build Top-Tier Computer Science Program at Illinois Tech) in the next few years which should bring a lot of resources and prominence to the CS department.

Hope this helps
