I know that UIUC’s actuarial science program is one of the best in the nation, but I’ve also read some posts online that in the past couple of years the quality has been going down. Can anyone give their insights on whether this is true or not? Also, how competitive is admissions into the program? My SAT is 1470 (790 math and 680 reading).
My understanding that there has been some actuarial science professor turnover during the past couple years, so that might be what you’re referring to online. However, success as an actuary is more about passing the applicable exams as opposed to school name, and I haven’t seen any indication that UIUC has gone down in terms prepping students for such exams. I don’t believe that actuarial science is a restricted major (unlike, say, Computer Science or Bioengineering), so its admissions requirements should be the same as the rest of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (although others should correct me if I’m wrong). Generally speaking, the challenge with the typical actuarial science program is more about getting out and graduating (and then passing the requisite exams) as opposed to getting in.
