UIUC alternate choice econ -take it or leave it?

Hi all,

I got admitted into my alternate choice (econ) instead of my first choice (finance). i called and asked if i could transfer into business after i took some courses in the u, but the officer said no, business school doesnt accept other department transfers. i really want finance, but should i compromise my major just because i got accepted into u of illinois?

i applied to texas austin, illinois urbana, wisconsin madison. im an international junior transfer.

fyi, the pool of applicants this year for business school is soo competitive! (congrats to those who made it to the business school) minimum gpa to be considered is 3.9 and mine is 3.83.. :(

and what do u think of economics in illinois?

The gpa range of admitted business transfers for last year were from 3.13-4.0. So the minimum gpa of a 3.9 to be considered doesn’t sound right.

i dont know thats what the counselor said. she said this year the business transfer applicants are so competitive that the gpa of admitted applicants is 3.9 and above. i wasnt really surprised though, because i knew that uiuc has been known for its rigorous selection process, but i just didnt expect such a high 3.9 gpa.

honestly not to get your hopes up but you shouldnt go to illinois if you want to go to business and didnt get in…Transfering to business is nearly impossible…friend with a 3.7 was not able to transfer… it is like impossible to transfer dude…

if you got into iu business go there or go to a school where you got into to business department…you dont want to go to illinois and realize you cant transfer into business

also economics for the liberal arts college is not that good compared to other schools you could probably attend for business…

Though you received wrong information that the business school does not accept inter-college transfers, you should assume that the probablity of transfer is not high. You will have one chance to attempt to transfer into business college from LAS – after first year into second year; transfer decisions for business are made after your grades come out at end of second semester freshman year. Usually, less than 50% who apply for transfer are accepted. 3.9 is not the average but you should assume you need to be in the 3.5 or better range to be seriously considered and having high grades does not in any way guarantee transfer as the business college does a full file review and has been known to reject some with 4.0 GPAs. In other words, if you really want businees, your safer bet is to attend elsewhere where you have already been accepted into a business program.

Wisco4life-At Wisconsin don’t you have to transfer in after freshman year too?

i am not sure honestly sorry…i studied biochem at wisco. I had a lot of friends that went to illinois and other schools for alternate majors hoping they could transfer but they never ended up getting in…a lot of people go in to the mindset that they are going to transfer and only a selected few actually get accepted. Its extremely hard and you shouldnt ever bank on it
