UIUC and Purdue University Engineering admission chances

I'm going into my senior year of high school and i love math and science, so i would really like to go into engineering when i get to college, either chemical or nuclear, i'm not quite sure yet.

I know that UIUC and Purdue university are two top 10 engineering schools in the US and i would love to go to either one, but i'm not sure if my credentials are enough to get into their engineering colleges. If anyone could tell me how i would fare, it would be greatly appreciated.

UW GPA: 3.58
Class rank: 18 of 203 (top 9%)
SAT: 1940 (retaking in october) 600 R, 720 M, 620 W
SAT subject tests: CHEM: 680, BIO M: 710, MATH II: 730
math and science grades since freshman year:
algebra 1 accelerated: B+ Biology Honors: B+ (freshman)
Geometry accelerated: A- Chemistry regular: A (sophomore)
(took an algebra 2 course over the summer and got an A)
Pre-calculus HON: A- Biology AP: A-

Next year i'm taking Physics honors, AP AB Calculus, and AP statistics

By the end of next year i will have taken 7 AP classes (english language and english lit, us and european history, bio, calc, and stats)

i have about 200 hrs of community service helping out with a youth basketball team and helping the special needs kids in my school with their classes (a club im in called peer mentoring)

EC's: Peer mentoring, Arts academy (an art class that replaces homeroom), ambassadors club (show people around at open houses), science olympiad, and im on the staff for my schools art and literary magazine.

By the way i'm out of state for both of these schools

Your GPA is a bit low for their engineering school. Also the mid 50 CR+M for UIUC engineering is 1360-1480. Your CR+M is only 1320. Are you from Indiana or Illinois? If not, then they would be a low reach for you.

Any recommendations for top engineering schools that i would have a better chance of getting into?

also, could i consider URI engineering a safety school? Because as of right now that is my only safety school, (BTW im in state for URI)

Definitely apply to URI but you might also look into the smaller [Association of Independent Technological Universities: AITU](http://theaitu.org) schools where you might be a fit. These might be as affordable as OOS public universities.

Anyone else?

As far as engineering goes, what I’ve heard is that this country needs engineers so much that your alma mater isn’t as important as one might think. As long as where you go has an ABET accreditation then you should be good. Here are some engineering schools I’m looking at that you might want to check out-

Ga Tech (really good reputation but not as competitive for addmissions as, say, MIT), RIP, WIP, UT at Austin…

All these schools have good reputations and with your stats I’d say that RIP and WIP would be matches. At WIP they are ‘test optional’ so if your SAT doesn’t go up you would have an alternative option. If you are a girl you will have a shot at Ga Tech. I’d say that Ga Tech is a low reach for you.

And if money is an issue, don’t be afraid to go to your state’s university, chances are they have good research oppurtunities which will help build your resume for a potential job.

How come no ACT?

I just never took the ACT…apparently my equivalent ACT score for a 1940 would be around 30 though…

Yeah, I got a 30 on the ACT but my highest SAT was an 1860. You might want to try the ACT just because some people do better on one test then the other depending on their strengths.

Yeah i might have to try it, any other opinions about the original question?

One should definitely try both SAT and ACT at least on practice. Most people would do similarly in both (after conversion) while some would do better in one or the other. By trying both, you will get a better chance for higher score without taking the same test too many times.

Your stats are pretty decent, as you know you’ll be going against people with a lot better stats but that doesn’t mean that you dont have a shot at these schools. While you might get in, what would help would b great LOR’s and a great essay, youre not going to qualify for merit scholarhips for either school. I’d say you have a shot and if these are your dreams schools, definetly apply. Other good engineering schools you might have a shot at- GT, WPI, RPI (i’d say the last two are matches for you)

Thats funny you say that, I visited WPI and am visiting RPI on the 14th, they are both on my list of colleges i’m going to apply to

Awesome, once you go there post on this thread what you thought of them bc im thinking of applying to them as well :)

well WPI was so-so; i didnt like the campus too much, but the student led tour we got was great and the community there seemed really tight-knit. As far as RPI, im actually visiting on the 12th, not the 14th, and i hear its supposed to be way nicer than WPI, but ill have to see for myself when i visit…

FYI. The mid50 ACT for UIUC engineering is 31-34.

Do you know of any way i can find out the mid 50% of ACT and SAT for OOS applicants?

I don’t think that data is available, but I believe ~25% admitted last year was oos.

ok thank you

Well, if you had a ‘hook’ you might get in if your score was below the middle 50%. And that’s cool that WPI was tight-knit, that’s what I want- the big state universities just feel too big i guess…

I’m interested in engineering as well, and from what people have told me on the threads that I’ve started/read it’s not as big of a deal where you graduate from as long as they have an ABET accreditation. Also, I’ve read that state universities will offer less aid to OOS students than IS students while private schools will offer equally to be OOS and IS students so maybe you want to keep that in mind about UIUC. Unless money isn’t an issue for you, and if that’s the case you are one lucky duck. :)
