Does anyone have an idea on any averages for admitted anthro/archaeology students at UIUC? Typical or competitive GRE, GPA's, etc?

My wife will be applying in the fall, BS in education with a history minor (no anthro or arch) and a 3.77gpa and ~1300 GRE, about a year of working with a group of state and univeristy archaeologists. Good LOR's, still formulating an SOP.

I'm just trying to figure out where she stands and what the specific differentiators would be.

Her stats would be in line with accepted student stats, but that means little in graduate admissions; many applicants are numerically qualified. A great deal depends on:

1) Her specific interests
2) Whether a faculty member is willing to sponsor her
3) Availability of funding

Thanks! I certainly know from my own experience how much the factors you cited dominate - I just wanted to know how her stats matched up. Part of the reason I chose UIUC for myself was because she felt she was a good match to the program and professors.

Do you have any opinion on the quality of the program? She is specifically interested in the historical archaeology group.

UIUC is generally considered to have the best archaeology program in the Midwest after Michigan. I’m primarily familiar with Mediterranean archaeology, but I’ve heard only good things about the labs and resources at Illinois.

She did not get in - her prospective advisor told her she was his selection, but the department wound up cutting the assistantship he was going to pay her with. She did a masters at ISU nearby (we were here anyway!) and is looking at starting her PhD after I finish mine - we should be in the area of some good east coast schools at that time.
