Hi guys! Im currently a Junior thinking about potential colleges to apply to and I’m wondering what my chances are of getting into Urbana Champagne Engineering School. I scored a 2260 on the SAT but I have a 3.4 GPA nonweighted and I go to a competitive high school where everyone takes a bajillion APs and 5.0s are the norm. I do not have a class rank because my school doesn’t do that anymore. For extracurriculars I am part of a FTC robotics team and I am head of the mechanical engineering department of a nonprofit that promotes STEM. Any tips and comments would be appreciated
Your GPA is low for Engineering, but you have active leadership. That should give you something unique to write about in your essay. Go to the bookstore and look at books with sample essays. Write an essay that is truly fun to read and you might have a chance. My son had a high GPA but low SAT. I think he got in because of his essays. They were very well written and interesting. Don’t just write about how good you are (your essay would just look like everyone else’s.) Instead, show it by finding one SMALL thing or incident to write about. That is what my son did. Note that many of the really interesting essays write about something pretty mundane that worked out well… Hypothetical example, “Why you have a whole new appreciation for the rubber band, when one saved the day at your Lego Competition.” One suggestion, when you write your essay(s), be sure to spell Champaign correctly. (It is not spelled like the drink.).
I think that your gpa is a bit low but you have a good chance. Would you mind changing me on my thread?
