UIUC Class of 2024 Discussion

Daughter submitted her application early this month for early action.

my sister is submitting hers soon as well. I currently go here, and know she will most likely get in, but still very nervous for her. (she’s applying for speech & hearing sciences in the college of applied health sciences).

My son has 4.04 GPA and working to improve it to 4.15 by RD. He is interested in CS. He has completed rigorous CS courses. President of FBLA and started automotive club at school. Expecting good recs from school counselor. Should he wait for RD or do EA with low 4.04 GPA? ACT: 35.

@PunnamJ, admisison decisions are based on grades through junior year, including for regular admission applicants, so waiting for better first semester, senior year grades is not a consideration. Also, particularly for something like CS, the RA round can be harder to obtain admission than the EA round because a large percentage of the number of total admissions that will be given will have already been given in the EA round.

Also, UIUC does want any recommendation letters. If provided, they will not be shown to anyone who actually makes an admission decision.

^ I meant UIUC does not want recommendation letters

4.04 out of ??? 5.0? For CS I suggest applying early. It is a competitive major. If he gets deferred he can submit mid-year grades that bring up his GPA.

4.04 weighted. Some APs are for weighted for 5 and others for 4. His unweighted is around 3.7 but the does not calculate unweighted. Doesn’t UIUC require teacher recommendations?

Applying with a 3.684 UW gpa and 4.647 W gpa with a 32 act and 33 superscore to Stats&CS major. My extracurriculars are extremely good and my essay is around a 8 or 9 out of 10. I’m also in state and applying EA. My gpa went from a 3.67 freshman year to a 3.47 sophomore year to a 3.915 junior year and I took 4 APs junior year and 2 sophomore year

@PunnamJ As I mentioned above, UIUC does not want any recommendations, teacher or otherwise. https://admissions.illinois.edu/FAQ/applicant-freshman and open "Do you accept letters of recommendation or other additional materials?

@diekuz89, you can see last two year’s middle 50% range for your desired
major here https://myillini.illinois.edu/Programs/MajorDetail/10KV0464BSLA The GPA given is unweighted. You are within that range, although in the lower half of that range. Having higher junior year with 4 APs is a positive. Be aware that UIUC does not use the essay section of the ACT or SAT tests and does not superscore tests. Also, OOS and in-state are evaluated for admission the same, except that in-state is favored when deciding admission for the second choice majors in an application.

@drusba so will the junior year gpa help me a lot? And also I just recently found out that UIUC looks at the highest sections across multiple tests, but does not form a new composite- so basically superscore.

That statement you found about using highest subscores is over-generalized. What happens is that colleges/departments may consider certain higher section scores from a second test with a lower composite than the first. For example, the engineering college will give consideration to a higher math score in a second test, but not other subscores. The same will happen with. CS/Stats in A&S. Grade improvement can be a plus factor but the decision depends on most everything in the file, so trying to say something has a “lot” of effect is simply speculation when you are dealing on the individual level of review. It helps but it is still only part of the evaluation.

what estimated % chance do I have of getting in? My extra-curriculars are very good btw including 2 amazing internships, and many more CS/math ecs along with 100+ volunteer hours and other clubs I diversified in.

What chance do I have for Comp Sci
