Just interested in thoughts on the College of Business and University of Illinois vs. Kelley School at Indiana Unviersity. I have already been accepted at Kelley with 9k/yr scholarship and have not been accepted at Illinois but expect to be accepted. Looking to major in finance and work in something finance related or consulting preferably in either Chicago, Minneapolis, or NYC. I do not live in either Illinois or Indiana. Which would YOU prefer mostly in terms of job placement, but also considering teaching quality, student life, and facilities.

Kelley.

I was in your position a couple years ago, and made the choice to attend IU (but I was instate for Illinois). It is a lot cheaper and has better placement into i-banking (possibly consulting as well, but I am not positive).

Kelley has a lot of good professional clubs, and exceptional workshops. The investment banking workshop has 100% placement into investment banking positions. There is also the investment management workshop, and the management consulting workshop (not sure of their placement records).

Student life is amazing (but I am sure it’s great at Illinois as well).

How hard is it go get into the workshops? If you carry a 3.7 or higher, do you have a very good chance to get in?

It is required to have a 3.5+ to apply. If you have a 3.7+ you have a good shot at getting in (but it depends on other things as well). The average GPA is about a 3.83.

You can view the resumes of people who get into the workshop by clicking on their photo here: http://www.kelley.iu.edu/ibn/Members/memberViewForm_1.cfm?gradYear=2011&affType=1

3.7 is enough to get into the interview. After that its up to how well you do in the interview and your internships.

I would also pick Kelley (note that maxellis and I are both Kelley students). While U of I CoB is harder to get into than Kelley, I believe Kelley has an overall better placement in more lucrative jobs through their specialized workshops.

I have heard the consulting workshop has very competitive placement.

Thanks a lot. I appreciate it.

I am a senior at ETHS and have been accepted to both Illinois and Indiana Business schools. Have you kept in contact with anyone who is at the business school at Illinois, and if so, have you learned anything about their differences? Are you happy with your decision to go to Indiana?

I know a couple people at Illinois, and they enjoy it. When we are hanging out together, school rarely comes up. However, my impression is that Illinois is a fine business school and they have an abundent amount boutique job/internship opportunities in Chicago. I am very happy with my choice of Indiana. We haven’t really talked about the coursework very much, but I do remember IU has a lot more group projects than Illinois.

Out of curiosity, did we beat New Trier in basketball this year? Are there still fights after the games?

My son looked at both U of Ill and IU we are in-state Illinois. He really liked IU Business Program better than U of I. Don’t get me wrong both are very good.

What it came down to wasw the personal attention he felt at IU (small school feel) they really push that and have been successful at it. Also, he felt like the campus. He really liked what he saw and felt at IU vs U of I.

I would recommend visiting both business schools and see how you feel. Be sure you go the Direct Adm admit days at IU, this will give you some additional information to make your decision.

One other addition is IU is making a huge addition to their Business School. This shouldn’t make you final decision but it is really nice.
