Just interested in thoughts on the College of Business and University of Illinois vs. Kelley School at Indiana Unviersity. I have already been accepted at Kelley with 9k/yr scholarship and have not been accepted at Illinois but expect to be accepted. Looking to major in finance and work in something finance related or consulting preferably in either Chicago, Minneapolis, or NYC. I do not live in either Illinois or Indiana. Which would YOU prefer mostly in terms of job placement, but also considering teaching quality, student life, and facilities.

I’m in the exact same boat as you. I’ve read some really good reviews of the Kelley school but am under the impression that Illinois is an overall more prestigious school than Indiana. Even though Kelley is slightly higher than Illinois in the business rankings, I am thinking that Illinois is a better choice. I visited Illinois over the summer during my college trip and was really impressed with the campus, facilities, and the atmosphere. It is nothing like the schools out here in California. I haven’t been accepted to Illinois yet (fingers crossed) but I would choose Illinois over Indiana if you are like me and looking for a ton of school spirit and big time academics. Indiana is great option though, especially if you need that 9k scholarship. In the end, it just seems to me like “Illinois” carries more pop than “Indiana”. Nobody in California really talks about these schools though so if I am missing something please enlighten me.

Kelley, overall, is a much better business school than UIUC cob. Yes, UIUC is a much better school than IU, but if you wanna do business and especially things like Finance, Marketing and Entrepreneurship. Kelley will be better choice than UIUC cob. Kelley is a real business school with a wonderful MBA and doctoral program. You will have much to gain in IU Kelley than UIUC business. The workshops of IB and Consulting are wondrous in Kelley. But if you are accounting, then, UIUC, will be a better option.

I am really glad that someone started this thread!

I have applied to 5 different schools for business (Ohio State, University of Illinois, Indiana Univeristy, University of North Carolina, and University of Virginia) but if i do not get into UVA or UNC, my final decision will probably come down between UIUC and IU.

I have heard great things about Kelley, but i was more impressed with Illinois CoB personally. And especially if i get into the business honors program. Illinois has a brand new building and it seems like their business program is really growing and becoming strong. I know UIUC is really stong in finance, while Kelley may have the edge in marketing-type majors

However, since you are OOS like me the 9k (or more) a year may push you to IU.

Good luck on your decision, and i am interested to see what other people have to say about Kelley vs. UIUC CoB :)

Kelley has a business honors program as well and is higher regarded in finance than UIUC.

dibbastya, you have no idea what you are talking about. Saying that Kelley is a “much better business school” than the UIUC CoB is ludicrous. In fact, using the rankings of Business Week, and similarly US News, UIUC falls only 2 spots behind Kelley. These rankings are, as always, subjective, and so you would be led to postulate that the two schools are roughly the same caliber of business school. In fact, what it really comes down to is the specialty within business, which each school has its own specialty. Even then, they are still very comparable.

Honestly, visit the two and see which you like.
