UIUC College of Business or Indiana Bloomington Kelley School of Business?

I got in both but Indiana gave me a scholarship of 20grand. I am not sure about UIUC. Kelley does offer a wonderful business education but UIUC's overall ranking and reputation is a lot better, to be honest. So what do you guys think? Thanks for any advice!

UIUC is great for accounting, but I was under the impression that IU-Kelly is much better all-round school. Either way, go with the 20k scholarship.

Much better--not really. Maybe slightly better--possibly.

But the ranking for business schools of both universities are very close. Kelley is only slightly ahead of UIUC.
anyhow, thanks for the advice!

UIUC has new business instructional facility opening up for business students this fall. I would also say that UIUC has more to offer when you decide that you don't want to do business (top ranked engineering and sciences).

Yeah i guess that's why UIUC's ranking moved up this year on Businessweek.

Hi, I used to be in the same boat as you and I finally decide to go to UIUC and I plan to major in management. I have a friend in Kelley and he told me that if I get into UIUC, I should choose UIUC rather than Kelley... Still, Kelley business program is amazing. Hope this gunna help

Hey, tanop9. Thanks for the reply and it is really important to me. So wat do you think of College of Business so far? It seems that the teaching quality is not as good. But the career service is fab. Do you have any opinions on that? Thanks!

Don't they both have good accounting programs? I think UIUC (this is beyond business) has better to offer overall, but if Indiana gave you $20K then you should probably take it. The only reason you shouldn't go to Indiana, in my opinion, is if you don't think you'd be happy there.

Do you live in one of these states?

No prob. MaxineZhou ^^" I also recieved the 20k scholarship as same as you. I have a friend in UIUC who minor in business and he said that the teaching qualitiy is great so he strongly recommend me to choose UIUC. I know that this is a dilemma for you cuz it took me a month b4 i can make a final decision. For me I am an international student and overall reputation matter A LOT in my country.

My son is in the business school at Indiana--and my opinion is that it depends upon the major. I wouldn't suggest going to Indiana if you plan to major in accounting, but I wouldn't suggest going to Illinois if you plan to major in finance or entrepreneurship.

Also, if you plan to major in operations management, then you should have applied to Purdue (best of the three for that major).

Lastly, if you do plan to possibly change majors and go into engineering, then you shouldn't go to Indiana, since the state of Indiana--when they built their two state schools--put the engineering school in West Lafayette at Purdue.

Anyway, good luck with your choice. When schools are close like this, I usually suggest that the student go to the cheapest school overall for them--or to the one that gives them the best "feeling".

According to the USNews Finance ranking of 2008, there is no actual difference between UIUC Finance and Kelley Finance. Kelley marked at 8th while UIUC is 10th. I think both school provides excellent finance program and learning experiences.

Overall, I would recommend UIUC business because they have stronger student body. If we compare SAT scores of those two business programs, UIUC average is 1340 and Kelley average is 1253 as it mentioned in Businessweek data. Also, I agree with tanop9 that overall reputation matters, too. There are more options to change your majors at UIUC if you become dislike about majoring in business. (worldclass engineering program, outstanding nature science majors)

IU is rubbed off as a regular old state school. UIUC is a little bit something else, with better programs in general. Engineering, psychology, etc.

UIUC > IU, even if it is for business. UIUC will make its way up the ladder sooner or later.

I think I am going to pick UIUC over Indiana. Thanks for everyone's advice and they are really helpful for me!

Before you make your decision, let me go over the benefits of Kelley in an nutshell.

IU Kelley and UIUC are very similar rankings wise; however, teaching quality is where the game varies. Kelley has a world renowned faculty which has received first place for "Best Faculty" and "Best Classroom Experience" from The Princeton Review. In addition, Kelley grads are in their highest demand. 92% of Kelley students have received their first job offer by spring break (keep in mind, their entrepreneurship program is #2 in the country and there are plenty of students who go on for their MBA's). Over the next 4 years, Kelley will be updating their undergraduate facilities which will further catapult the school into its already elite territory. Take the money and run, IU Kelley is the best choice for sure.

im in the same situation, also received $20k from indiana, but dont know whether to take the offer or go to uiuc without any money
im oos for both schools

Yeah, I live in Illinois and I got accepted to both. I got a $32,000 from IU and just financial stuff from Urbana. In all, I think IU is going to cost like 4K more. But if what Steve720 says is true, I think I'll be going to IU.

It is true that IU has good teaching quality, but so does UIUC. If you look into the profiles of professors from UIUC who teach accounting or finance, most of them received their Ph.D degree from one of the most renowned universities such as Harvard, MIT, University of Chicago, etc. And, UIUC COB will open its new undergraduate facilities this fall which would benefit new freshmen as well as current students.

I graduated from UIUC in 2006 (finance) - got hired by a major investment management company in Wall Street straight out of college.

I have to thank UIUC for that! I really don't know why overall USNews ranking for UIUC is in the 30s. The Finance program, I feel, is one of the best in the country!
