As a prospective student, I’ve been admitted to both Business Schools directly. My intended major is for finance, though I do have an interest in minoring in Political Science (I know its not part of the business school, just giving my interests).
I am instate for UIUC, but with the Dean’s Scholarship, the tuition needed to pay is almost even.
I know Kelley is stronger for Finance and as a Business School overall, but overall, UIUC seems like the more well-rounded academic institution.
With that being said, can you guys give some advice? Thanks!
First, let me say I’m biased. I have two children who are current CoB students at UIUC. Both are double majoring with finance, being one of them. However, neither is interested in IB.
My son, who is a sophomore, was in a similar situation with acceptances from U of I and IU and the cost of attendance approximately the same due to scholarships. We attended both accepted student days on campus. Ultimately, he chose UIUC and I’ll explain why.
First, Kelley has a much larger incoming class…it’s been a while, but I believe U of I has about 750 students per grade level, while Kelley was ~1200. On its own a large class isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but we felt it could be a negative in regard to business frats, leadership positions, internships, etc.
Next, we were impressed with UIUC’s job placement, study abroad programs, locked in tuition rate and generous AP credit. Having a strong engineering college was also a plus, knowing it attracts tech companies to campus.
But to be honest, I feel one of the main reasons he chose U of I (even though his older sister was there) was the fact that the people he knew who were accepted to Kelley, were not the strongest students at his high school.
So my advice is to visit both campuses and if possible, shadow a student. Prioritize what is important to you. If you are sure you want IB, then Kelley may be the better choice. Good luck with your decision!
Congrats
As you already know, Kelley is better for IB.
Now, other factors : classes your APs allow you to bypass; favorite college town; special option or minor you may be interested in and how easily you’ll be able to…
Can you do an overnight at both?
@88jm19 Yea I definitely feel the smaller, probably more selective CoB at Illinois is an asset for opportunities, and I do feel the IBA program at Illinois, though not Kelley IB workshops, is also very good. I guess direct admit day at Indiana will help me edge toward to a decision.
