UIUC Computer Engineering and Computer Science difference

I know UIUC computer sciences is very competitive to get in. How about Computer Engineering? What is the acceptance rate?

you have to understand that choosing computer engineering just because computer science is too competitive does not give you any advantage in terms of your acceptance rate. UIUC’s engineering courses are holistically competitive and only the top students can barely scratch the acceptance; and the same is true for CS. If a student can get admitted to CS, the same student can also get into computer engineering at the same time because the competitiveness of the course is very much the same.

@coreau0806 And what are you basing that off of?

@coreau0806 That’s what I thought…no answer…

@arjundupa chill out man i live in asia so the time difference is huge; besides I don’t visit this platform very often. Well anyways, because the engineering course, in general, is one of the most selective and competitive courses at UIUC (you can go check the stats online, UIUC undergrad computer engineering is ranked 4th and grad computer engineering is 5th in the world), unless you are one of the top students, it is really hard to get into even if it is “computer engineering”. So you must rmb that CE is as competitive and challenging as the CS.
But of course, I am not a UIUC student; I just senior student waiting to end my high school career very soon, so dont completely rely on my sources. But at least, I can tell you that Ive done some accurate and precise research on this school.

@coreau0806 I live in Asia too.

I agree with everything you said. It is highly ranked for CE. It is a competitive program. Only the top students get in. I get that. What I don’t agree with is your comparison with CS admissions. I don’t agree that the competitiveness is the same. There’s a reason why students can only apply to one or the other. UIUC got more than 3000 applications for engineering CS last year. I’d be willing to bet that CE got less than 2000. Of course, I don’t have sources to back this claim up, but the fact that students can only choose one does make a difference. A huge difference. I’ve done my research as well. The craze for CS is incomprehensible. I’m not saying CE is not competitive. But I am saying, very confidently, that CE is less competitive than CS. Much less, I’d argue.

@arjundupa if you are so sure about your statistics, what is the purpose of you posting this? you know that you can only choose one either from ce or cs; and you know cs is tougher than ce. And I assume you’ve applied already (i mean you cant anymore coz the deadline for regular has passed). Is there a whole point in discussing about “which is one easier” to get into?

@coreau0806 You made an absurd claim about the competitiveness of the majors three days after the deadline. I commented that I disagree. And here we are now. Of course it doesn’t matter to us. It may help others in the future.

CS major in UIUC accepts fewer students than in Computer Engineering and Electrical Engineering. The freshmen class this year has 77 in CS, 105 in Electrical Engineers and 130 Computer Engineering. If you are playing the number game apply to Computer Engineering.
