Are you in-state?

Did you take computer science classes in high school and do well in them?

Out of state and have taken computer science throughout high school with A’s. I am also an office in the Computer Science Club.

Being in-state would have helped, but otherwise you seem to be a competitive applicant. Good luck!

Do you think you could quantify my chances?

Do you do any computer programming competitions such as USACO? Those help a lot.

I Do UIL programming competitions like code wars as I mentioned in my posts. I have not done USACO.

Are you an Asian male? The GPA may hurt a bit. You have to realize that there are many applicants like you, even though you are strong.

Yes I am an Asian male

That just makes it harder. UIUC is one of the few Illinois schools that takes race into consideration. Asian + male + cs = hard demographic :frowning:

I am not doing CS I am doing Computer Engineering

They are similar. STEM for Asian males are hard.

Both majors are under the Grainger College of Engineering. That’s the college/department to which you would need a direct-admit. No one can quantify your chances. Only 13% of students are from out-of-state (this does not count international students, though). The acceptance rate for Grainger is <20% (I swear I read it was as low as 12-13%, but I didn’t bookmark that news article), considerably less than the university on the whole. While you are a competitive applicant, UIUC Grainger should be considered a reach college for everyone - in or out of state.

Out-of-state students do not get any financial aid at UIUC, so run the net price calculator (NPC) to make sure it is affordable.

I got into Engineering undeclared at UIUC with a 1440 SAT (670CR/770M) super score and 4.1 GPA and I was out of state (granted that I had a bunch of ECs and had legacy). You should be fine and I wouldn’t worry at all

@collegeboardtookmy_money UIUC does not consider legacy in admissions.

Is undeclared or computer engineering harder to get into? I heard undeclared is selective.

I can afford it and thanks for the info.

Many engineering majors are not all that selective at UIUC.
Some, like CS, Mechanical and Bio are very selective.
EE/CE are one tier down from those.

@blityr123 You can find the middle 50% SAT and GPA here: https://myillini.illinois.edu/Programs/ComparePrograms
Your SAT is above that range for CE and your GPA is within the range. I would say CE is a solid target major for you and you have a better than average chance for admission given your AP coursework and EC. You should still have a safety or two, of course.

when I look at the admission statistics, computer engineering is easier than cs. Im sure the course work is similar but not the admission rate.

What Ecs did you have? Are mine comparable?
