UIUC CS+Econ vs Rutgers CS vs UMD CS

Currently, I am stuck between these three options and I was wondering if anyone could help me figure out what to do here. UIUC comes out to around 50K, UMD is around 50K, Rutgers is around 37K. I also got honors program at Rutgers, and FIRE at UMD. I can afford the extra money to go out of state. I am from southern jersey so Rutgers is in-state for me. I would really appreciate any advice.

Great Choices to have.

If my son had those, I’d have recommended to go with UIUC.
UIUC over Rutgers at +13k, I think UIUC
UIUC over UMD at flat, definitely UIUC
UMD (assuming direct admit to CS) over Rutgers at +13k is close …

Illinois.

Would you rather study CS or CS+economics?

How much of a difference does the price difference actually matter to you and your family?

I agree with the question of what do you want to study. I disagree with uiuc in that I’m sure that’s a ranking answer. 3 great and different schools in 3 different environments. Just because you go to UIUC who has a string program provides no guarantee. It’s in an isolated town. It’s an ugly campus. Will you want to come home regularly ? The others are closer. Do you want to be near a big city ? You need to go visit and see if one feels like home. You need to spend four years. Make sure it fits you

Have you had the opportunity to visit UIUC? CS+X is a newer program & not in Grainger school of engineering. I would think long and hard about suffering through Illinois weather. Maryland is gorgeous & CS program is fantastic

I agree with the previous poster that CS+X is a very different program with less CS content and less mathematical. Students can obviously elect to take additional CS and math courses to make up the differences, but I don’t know if those CS courses at UIUC are prioritized for CS students from the engineering school. It’s a different story, of course, if you’re looking to apply CS techniques to solve some economic problems, in which it may be a very good option.

honestly, I was planning on either minoring or double majoring economics no matter where I want so I don’t think it’d make too much of a difference in my eyes. I can afford the price difference. Thank you for your response

Thank you for your advice! I am planning on visiting later in Spring so, I will keep that in mind

I haven’t been able to visit yet but yea weather is definitely a little annoying but I think I could bear it

I am interested in both CS and Economics at any school I go to. At UIUC, CS+X has lower priority than CS students for course registration but higher than every other major I believe. I am planning on taking those extra classes to make up the gap, if that helps with any context. Thank you for your response

If can afford 50K, you like the CS+Econ option, UIUC is hard to beat, but if you want topnotch CS, UMD (and FIRE is a nice bonus).
If you can’t afford 50K, Rutgers will give you what you need; you’ll have to complete the CS offerings a bit with initiative, but the Honors College is excellent and will help you get what you need.

CS & Economics is a great course of study for one with an interest in management consulting.

OP: Any career objective ?
