Hi guys!
I got into both UIUC and Umass Amherst for cs. The cost for UIUC will be around ~$50k/yr, while umass amherst will be ~$25k/yr.
Is UIUC worth it? My parents are generously paying for my undergrad, but we want to make sure any decision we make is worth it financially. I am interested in the academic/research part of CS and want to continue in academia after undergrad (probably going to get masters or phd). Would UIUC set me up better than umass amherst for this?
Does Umass honors college provide any perks I can’t get at UIUC? Will it be easier to get into a good grad school from umass or UIUC? Where can I get more involved in research? Are there any opportunities unique to UIUC?
@privatebanker Hey, I’m faced with the same decision as OP. Could u list a few of those reasons for umass honors? It seems like it is not too selective, at least from my school (maybe i just have smart friends lol), not that that affects my decision.
I just dont think umass undergrad is as well known for cs. There are awesome research opportunites, but not the same level of classes, and not the same high caliber peers. But it’s half the price…
This is grad school but it flows from here. Ta group and research. And culture. Top 20 in two of the most important categories.
Admit rate is below 30 percent undergrad for CS.
Honors college. Is a resume distinction for one. Housing advantages. Meetings and gatherings. Course selection. Access to academic advising at a high level. Also the opportunity to network and make friend groups within an elite cadre. These are just some of the things. I am sure they spell it out online
Here’s the rankings for cd and ai. From usnwr and overall school is number 70 and top 30 public flagship. And the cost.
Oh and the #11 ranking in AI is higher than Harvard Columbia and penn. cs #20 is a tie but one slot behind Harvard in a 3 way tie at #16. Just food for thought.
