So I applied to 8 universities in the US and got rejected from 7.
UIUC was the only one that admitted me, that too in the Division of General Studies (DGS) and not Computer Science which I originally applied for.
I am out of options so I decided to apply to UK (Manchester, Edinburgh, King's College, Bristol & Southampton)
As we all know, I need to decide on UIUC by 1st May. I donno what to do. To accept or not to accept ? Are any of the UK unis I mentioned a better option than DGS at UIUC ? How hard is it to move from DGS to Computer Science ?

Also,
I am from India. I scored 90% in my 10th ICSE and I am expecting 90+ in my 12th CBSE. What are my chances of getting into the UK universities considering i’m applying a little late ? (most people apply to UK by Jan. But CBSE results come out only by May end.) What are my chances ?

You can accept the offer at UIUC, and treat the UK universities as though they were wait-list situations. When you know about admissions offers from any of them, you can make a final decision. You will almost certainly lose your deposit but UIUC, but that really is a small price to pay for holding the space in case you don’t get in anywhere in the UK.

As for transferring from DGS to CS, that is a question you should ask the folks at UIUC. They will be able to tell you how hard it is to do that.

bump please…

You can accept at UIUC and later withdraw if you are later accepted elsewhere. There is no deposit for admission. However, you will also have to apply for housing by May 15 and that has a $150 deposit which you will lose if you withdraw.

If you applied to CS in engineering at UIUC and were not accepted but instead given DGS, you should not assume you will be able to easily transfer to engineering after a year at UIUC or even two. You need high grades for such a transfer; even then it is not guaranteed, and if you apply after first year for transfer into CS, fact that you were denied admission as a freshman to engineering will be considered against you.

What about Uk unis ? Anybody ?
